“Sorry,” he says, leaning his head inside the cab of the car. The scent of his cologne wafts past my nose and it takes everything in me not to groan. “I’m Enzo, and this here is my niece, Anna Banana.” He winks at Ro. “Your turn.”

I expect her to say something embarrassing or crude, but she says nothing. She’s too busy gawking at him with her mouth agape.

Good.

So I’m not the only one affected by him.

Nudging her with my elbow, I roll my eyes. “This is my sister-in-law, Ro.” I smile at Anna. “It’s nice to meet you Anna, I’m Danica.”

Recovering, Ro whispers, “I’m sorry. He winked at me, and I lost all train of thought.”

Tell me about it. Although, the body’s response to his sexy wink is nothing compared to the response it has when his head is between your thighs and he’s licking his lips, savoring the taste of you.

A deep raspy chuckle escapes Enzo’s mouth.

“Did you say your name is Danica?” the woman standing behind Anna questions. She ushers Anna to her side and bends at the knees, poking her head inside the window of the car. “As in the Danica he’s not allowed to be anywhere near?”

Well, that’s news to me. I wonder who made that rule.

“It’s fine, Carrie,” Enzo says, poking a thumb at the woman. “This is my sister-in-law, Carrie. She’s a bit of a stickler for following the rules.”

She scoffs, straightening to her full height. Coming up to his shoulder, she whacks her hand against his chest.

“Hey! Pregnant at seventeen, remember? Definitely not a rule follower. I just don’t want to get on your father’s bad side, or anyone’s for that matter. I heard Maria can get handsy with a frying pan. I promised I’d take you straight home and we’re already on our third stop.” She looks at me. “No offense, but if they find out I let him go anywhere near you, I’m dead meat.”

Ah, so dear old dad doesn’t want Enzo having anything to do with me. That certainly throws a wrench in my plan. I can’t imagine Wolf will be all that eager to grant my request to spare my brother and extend the deadline he imposed on me to expose Brent.

“Carrie, calm down.” He speaks to her but keeps his intense brown eyes on me. “Danica being here saves us a fourth stop.”

“There was a fourth stop?” she queries.

I clear my throat. “I’m sorry can we go back to the part where you’re not allowed to be near me?”

Enzo reaches around and pulls an envelope out of his back pocket, slapping it against the frame of the open window. “Conditions of my bail,” he explains. “But it also says I can’t be around my father, or any other felon for that matter and no one seems to care if I break that rule, so long as I’m there to eat the homemade manicotti my stepmother has waiting for me.” He eyes Carrie and pockets the envelope again.

I let that revelation stew for a moment. The last thing I want is for his bail to be revoked.

“I didn’t come here to cause you anymore trouble,” I say rather abruptly.

He brings his attention back to me, his gaze lingering for a beat before he looks at Ro.

“You like manicotti?”

I narrow my eyes. What an odd question.

“Uh…yes,” Ro replies. I don’t have to look at her to know she’s just as baffled I am. I can hear it in her tone.

“Carrie is going to drive you to my pop’s house and introduce you as the new secretary for Scotto Construction. They’ll feed you and try to interrogate you, but I think you can handle yourself.”

I don’t like where this is going.

He turns back to Carrie. By the look on her face, she doesn’t like where this is headed either.

Fabulous.

“Tell them I went home to shower, that I’ll be there when I’m done.” He glances at me, then his gaze cuts back to Ro. “Pull your car all the way behind the bar. When Danica and I are done, I’ll drive it to my dad’s house.”

Yeah, I definitely don’t like this.
