I nodded. “That’s perfect. One of those, please.”

She typed away again. “All right. How much do you want to transfer?”

“I don’t want to tie these accounts together. Is that okay?”

“That’s how I’m setting it up. You need special permissions to link accounts like that.”

“Wonderful. Um, half of what’s in the other account, please.”

“So, we’re transferring $350,873.23 into a compound interest savings account under the name Bonnie Moretti Rossi. Is that correct?”

I almost swallowed my tongue. “Yes. That’s correct.”

Silence fell between us for a while before she piped up.

“Do you want to sign up for paperless—”

“No,” I said quickly.

“All right. I’ll need an address, then. Well, I’ll need an address anyway. But I’ll need it now, as opposed to later.”

I paused. “Hold on really quickly.”

I pulled my phone away from my ear and sped through some screens, creating myself a personal, private email. Then, I rattled off the information for the woman on the other end.

“I’ll still need your address. But you can update it through your personal portal on your—”

“Can I set up a completely different portal than the one I’ve been signing into?” I asked.

She paused. “We can set that up for this account, yes.”

“Wonderful. Please, let’s do that.”

After making sure everything had been ripped away from my uncle, I felt settled enough to hang up the call. Things were getting messier by the second, but I knew one thing was for certain. The only person that was going to take care of me at that point was myself.

But that didn’t stop my guilt from forcing me to place a call to my cousin.

“Hey there, hot stuff. How’s it hangin’?” Brianna asked.

I turned to look out the windows. “Hey there.”

“So, how are things going with…you know? The plan?”

“Not quite as planned. I’m working it out.”

“Has he gotten to you yet?”

“What do you mean?”

“You know, Israel. Has he…bedded you yet?”

I furrowed my brow. “Why would you be interested in that?”

“I don’t know. Just curious.”

Uncle Pava has gotten to her.“How’s Hawaii?”

“Oh, that good, huh? Leaving out all the juicy details?”
