“Just like that.”

I paused. “So, where do you sleep?”

He grinned. “Already planning a visit?”

I shrugged. “Consider me curious.”

His eyes darted over to the bedroom door. “I’m just below you.”

“Good to know, then.”

He turned on his heels. “I’ll have my people gather the rest of your things from the basement so they can deliver them up here. Over in the corner is a laundry chute. Feel free to chuck your dirty clothes into it. My staff will get them washed, dried, pressed, and back up to you within a twenty-four-hour turnaround.”

I snickered. “You really enjoy the lap of luxury, don’t you?”

His eyes drew distant. “Whenever I can, yes.”

I wanted to keep poking and prodding. I wanted to know why the dark cloud now hanging over his face came on so quickly. What was it I said that triggered the reaction? What was he thinking about?

I resisted the urge, though. I didn’t want to press my buttons when this man had just given me one of the most precious gifts ever.

A wonderful view of the ocean, a temporary place to call my own, and an unguarded rooftop I had access to.

This, I can work with.
