He stared down at me. “Stay and help me take down Lorenzo’s trafficking ring. I know you want to help those girls, and while it might not seem like it, so do I.”

“I can do that from my office back home.”

“No, you can’t. This is going to require all hands on deck, and you know it. The reach of the Lucchese Family runs deep through these islands. Their influence is becoming international, and that spells trouble for a lot of people.”

“Including you?”

He nodded. “Including me, yes.”

I wiggled out of his grip. “So, you want me to help you take down one trafficking ring so you can swoop in and, what? Take what you feel is yours?”

He shook his head. “No.”

I stood to my feet as the euphoric high wore off. “Well, Teo, I can’t do anything you’re asking of me as your little plaything. You don’t get access to my expertise while treating me like some second-class citizen.”

He matched my movements and stood. “Have I not shown you I can trust you? Have I not given you your own quarters and your own space?”

“Yes, you have. And it’s been generous. But, it’s been under the guise of you keeping me here. In order for us to be equals, you’d have to completely lift the idea of you forcing me to stay here and see me as an independent adult with a life all her own. That’s the only way something like this works.”

“How do I know you’ll stay if I do that? How do I know I’ll get access to your expertise?”

I flipped the lock on the door. “Guess you’ll have to trust me as much as I trust you.”

Then, I threw the door open and made my way out of the pantry, heading for the closest bathroom I could find. So I could make myself look presentable again while Teo considered my counter-offer.

One I found myself hoping he’d take.
