What happened next blew my mind. I had gone from the family fat-ass that nobody wanted to the most desirable human in the whole damn universe. I felt like Helen of Troy as a fight broke out below.
Alien insects and sentient plants brawled as they strived to sample my essence. I watched in awe as wasp soldiers descended upon the auction floor to control the crowd.
I smiled, feeling more powerful and more desirable than I had my whole life. And while I intellectually knew I was drugged into compliance, I didn’t even mind.
I brought my fingers to my mouth to taste myself.
Huh.I did taste good.
Those dragged away protested being removed from the auction, literally begging and pleading to stay as they disappeared from the area, and my captor addressed the remainder of the attendees.
“She is a true universal delicacy sure to please any true arbiter of taste. So, who will be bringing this lovely human cow home today?”
The bidding commenced, and while I didn’t understand the currency, it must have been a lot. The wasp guards holding my cage murmured in awe.
Finally, there was a winner.
It was not bees or wasps who had won me, which was surprising, considering that they made up most of the population in the arena.
No, I was not that lucky.
Instead, I had been purchased by ants.
Large, tall, muscular demon ants.
If I had the ability to care, I would be terrified. Fire ants were in the top three most feared insects on Earth, along with murder hornets and killer bees. All three had the ability to overwhelm their target, suffocating their victims with pain and horror.
With their exoskeletons covered black overalls, the three ants approached my captor on two legs, feet encased in heavy work boots. Their arms bulged from their joints like a twenty-century cartoon— a four-armed Johnny Bravo or Popeye the Sailor Man. Like the ants on Earth, I imagined they could lift ten times their own weight if not more.
Long elbow-shaped antennas poked out the top of their wide-brimmed straw hats, making me think of the old farmers of lore who’d worked the land with their hands, tools, and simple machinery. Thick braids— one on each shoulder— hung nearly to their waists. Long and shiny, ebony streaked with vermillion. Their beautiful big black eyes with long lashes were something special to behold. Taking up most of their face, I knew they could see a lot, if not the full 360.
But the most prominent features were their large mandibles, positioned on each side of their mouth like oversized fangs.
After finishing the transaction, the humanoid ants came toward us. The wasps made aggressive noises.
“You don’t like them?” I asked.
“Ants are brutal creatures, constantly at war in their never-ending conquest for more land and resources,” explained one. “They wish to take over the whole planet.”
“These are just red farmer ants,” the other said, shaking his head. “Boss said that we need to be less prejudice.”
“They are soldiers before anything else,” the first countered.
“They can’t be too dangerous,” I shrugged. “Your boss doesn’t seem to mind them.”
“Mantises have no use for kingdoms and land. They only care about money and food.”
My eyes widened. “She’s not a human?”
“She is camouflaged,” he replied.
That was the end of our conversation. Two ants took the pole while a third covered the cage with fabric. I was then carried away.
Chapter Five
Ididn’t bother trying to interact with them. I laid down in the darkness and was lulled to sleep by the steady beats of the ants marching along. My dreams were filled with a children’s song…
The ants go marching three by three, hurrah, hurrah…
