Levon

I smiledas I tapped my pen against my desk. I cradled my phone in between my ear and my shoulder, unable to contain my excitement.

“I'm more than excited about the offer, sir,” I expressed happily. “I'm happy you chose me for the job.”

“We would like to get you started immediately on training.”

“Oh, that works just fine for me!”

“Steve isn't retiring until the end of the year, but we want you to train with him.”

I nodded. “That would actually be an honor. Steve is an amazing guy.”

“We think so, too! We're sad he's leaving, but we're ecstatic to have you on board in this position, Levon. You've really caught our attention.”

“Thank you so much, sir.”

“Now, I'm going to email you copies of the documents. You can sign them electronically. Once you've gotten that done, it'll be all set up and ready for you to go.”

“Wonderful—I'll check my email right now.”

“Great! Thank you, Levon. We look forward to working with you.”

I took a deep breath. “I look forward to it, too!”

I set my phone down and shrugged the energy off my shoulders. I was on fire. The HR department had called me just as I was getting ready to pick up Clara for the evening.

After I sign these documents, I'll have enough time to get dressed and get going.

I glanced tentatively at the clock.

Plenty of time. Just have to get these signed.

My heart soared as I opened up my email. The arduous account emails from my boss had officially stopped. I noticed the two emails from HR: one outlining my job in full and the other containing the electronic forms to be signed.

I clicked on the forms and opened them up, admiring the way they looked on the screen. I was seconds away from having a domestic job. I knew Clara would be ecstatic. My heart fluttered at the thought of her reaction to my news.

For the first time in a long time, I was going to be close to her. I wouldn't be running around Europe or Canada. I would be in her arms whenever I went to her house. I could visit her with frequency and spend real time with her. As much as it was for her, it was for me, too.

I needed her in my life. I knew that now. After we reunited, I discovered exactly what she meant to me. And I hadn't forgotten the things that had made me fall for her initially. It was her laugh and her smile. It was the way she flipped her hair when she was embarrassed or the cute way she spun around in front of the mirror after getting dressed.

Every inch of my body was ready to be done with signing forms so I could go to her. That was a new sensation. Typically, I was nose-deep in work—so much so that I would forget about the world entirely. But now, the world could wait.

And it could wait because I had Clara.

I scrolled through the remaining documents, being sure to skim through the details. Everything had already been outlined on the phone, but I wanted to be thorough. My excitement couldn't overshadow my thoroughness. As soon as I signed my initials at the bottom, I clicked the submit button and bounced up from my chair.

I raised my arms above my head.

“Yes!”

I darted from my room into the hallway, sprinting into the bathroom. I did a quick shave and applied lotion. I fixed my hair and returned to my room where I plucked out a white dress shirt and a pair of gray slacks. I chose a gray suit jacket to match and a bright tie, the one with purple flowers that Clara used to love tying around my neck.

I had hidden it away in the back of my closet. But I didn't need to hide it anymore. I wanted to wear it just for her to show her how important this news meant for us. I tied it quickly, nearly slipping with the knot. I fixed my pants, smoothed my jacket, and checked myself out in the mirror.

I smiled at my reflection.

“She's going to love this news.”
