I smiled at the bridesmaids next to me and then wandered to the group where Levon was hanging out. Everyone was preparing to leave. The boys were talking excitedly about something that I didn't really catch. I just kept staring at Levon.
“Well,” he said. “I guess I ought to get back to my parent's house.”
I eyed him carefully.
He caught me staring and mouthed the word, “What?”
I shrugged and scooted between a few bodies to get to him.
“Hey,” he said. “You heading out?”
“Yeah, actually, I was going to say,” I licked my lips and chuckled lightly. “You can stay at my place if you want. I'm sure the 'rents are treating you well, but my sister has a pretty nice house. I think she'll be busy tonight, so we'll have the place to ourselves.”
He raised his eyebrows curiously. “You want me to come over?”
“Yeah, why not?”
“I'd like that.”
“Me, too.”
He huffed a chuckle and nodded to the door. “Are you hungry?”
“I'm pretty full from the dinner.”
“Cool. Let's get going.”
I waved to the group next to us and followed Levon to the double doors. When we made it to the parking lot, he beeped to find his car.
“Oh, I drove mine here,” I said. “Will you follow me?”
“Of course.”
I walked to my car and hopped inside, starting the engine immediately. I watched my rear view mirror for Levon and didn't pull out of my parking space until I saw him pull up. As I headed for the exit, I stole glances at his car.
It wasn't like his old truck. He probably rented a car when he came back. While I maneuvered down the familiar streets to my sister's house, I couldn't contain the beating of my heart. It was practically bursting out of my chest. Every single old memory came back, nearly blinding me from seeing the road.
I pulled up into my sister's driveway and Levon parked behind me. I stepped out and waited for him on the porch.
He whistled. “Nice place.”
“Yeah, it's temporary.”
“When do you think you'll get an apartment?”
I shrugged. “I'm not sure. I've been so busy with the wedding that I haven't looked for one yet.”
“If you need any help with that, I know plenty of developments around here.”
I smiled as I fumbled with my keys. “That's kind of you.” I unlocked the door and tripped over the frame at the bottom. I would have fallen flat on my face if Levon hadn't caught my waist.
I cackled. “Well, ten more points for Levon.”
He joined my laughter and stood me upright. “Are those legs new? You've been tripping over them all night.”
“Yeah, they're fresh from the factory. How could you tell?”
“They have that new leg smell.”
