“It's going good! She left the day after the wedding, so I haven't quite heard from her yet.”
“Well, I hope she's having fun. She and Ryan looked so dang happy. I actually cried a little bit during the service.”
I smiled. “Awe, man! It was beautiful, wasn't it?”
I wonder if he noticed Clara and I leaving together?I blinked away the thought while keeping my facial features calm.I mean, it's none of his business, but he might harp on me about it.
“It was amazing. I'm so proud of Ryan for marrying Jen. She's a good woman and he will surely treat her well.”
I nodded. “Thankfully, he grew up, right?”
“You're right about that!”
“How's everything going with you?”
He bounced slightly, appearing relatively happy. “Everything is going really great. Clara came over last night and we hung out for a while.”
My mood shifted as my heart split open. “Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah, it was great. I was glad to see her. I didn't think we'd get to hang after things ended the way they did.”
“Yeah, I'm sure.”
“We had a good talk and everything is okay now.”
I forced a smile. “That's so good to hear.”
So, she cleared her head by running back to Gabe—that hurts.
“Do you want to grab lunch with me?” he asked. “We could hang out for a little while. I'm sure you need to get back on the work train soon and I need to prepare for New York.”
“You know, I . . . I actually need to get back to my parent's house. I was just taking a quick break from work and everything.”
“Awe, that sucks. I was hoping we could chill for a while.”
I nodded. “Maybe before we get too busy.”
“That would be awesome, man. I've been happy to see you around town. It's been really nice.”
“Yeah, it's been great, but you know how business is.”
“Yeah, the business world never stops.”
I chuckled nervously. “Anyway, I should get going.”
“Are you not going to grab a sandwich?”
“Nah, I forgot I needed to meet a client somewhere else.”
He nodded with understanding. “Always working, eh?”
“Always.”
“Well, good to see you! Let me know if you need anything. Don't be a stranger. I'll be leaving next month, so just text me whenever you want to hang out.”
I nodded. “Will do.”
I raced for the door, not bothering to clap him in a brotherly hug or shake his hand. I fled down the sidewalk as quickly as a nervous bride might flee down an aisle. I wasn't even sure why I was walking briskly, other than the fact that I felt heartbroken and betrayed.
