Avery met her eyes.“I don’t know. But he specifically told me to eat lunch first.I got a weird vibe. What if something is down there, and he’s planning to move it out before I can find it?”

Luciana stilled.“Good point.I still can’t imagine that it’s drugs from the cartels. It’s too small an amount for him to be moving merchandise for them, and it’s not like he could sell them here in their territory.”

“That’s true,” Avery said, frowning. She scanned the cafeteria.“I don’t see Walters here yet. He’s supposed to be on his lunch break, too.”

“Me either.Let’s quickly check the storage room.We can photograph anything we find.”

Her pulse pounding, Avery followed Luciana away from the dining area. They headed to the stairwell leading down to the basement.Avery felt shaky as they descended the old stairs.Something seemed wrong, and nearly every instinct in her body was telling her not to go into the storage room.

She needed to find out what Walters was hiding though. If he suspected she was onto him, this might be their only chance.

Avery almost wanted to bring more people with them in case there was a confrontation, but she didn’t want the other nurses to get into some sort of trouble.“Maybe we should’ve asked Dr.Brennan about this,” Avery said worriedly.“He might’ve had suspicions, too.”

“You want to turn back?”Luciana asked.

They’d reached the bottom of the stairs, and Avery’s gaze landed on the locked door.“No.We’re here, and this might be the only way we get any answers.”

Chapter 23

––––––––

HANDS SHAKING, AVERYpulled a key from her pocket and slid it into the lock. The hallway was dimly lit and quiet, but she could hear footsteps and conversations from above in the dining area. She glanced left and right, half expecting someone to jump out at her.

The area was silent.Still.She and Luciana were all alone.

Avery turned the key, pushing open the heavy door.It swung open, and the big, dusty room felt ominous.Dark.Silent as a tomb.

Avery felt for the light switch on the wall, flicking it on.Dim florescent lights buzzed to life, and she breathed a sigh of relief that the space was empty, save for the items stored there. No one was inside.

“No one’s here,” Luciana said quietly, her words echoing Avery’s thoughts.

“No.Let’s look around. This place is bigger than I remembered.”The women walked into the storage room, tall shelves filled with supplies and boxes lining the walls. It would take forever to find everything Walters wanted, and Avery doubted most of it was even here. But they would be able to snoop around for their own purposes.

“Why is that area empty?”Luciana asked, pointing to a bottom row on the left side of the room.

“Good question,” Avery murmured.
