“Fuck,” Sawyer muttered.“He looks like a prick.”
Ryan smirked.Sawyer wasn’t wrong. The man had pale skin and icy blue eyes, with a pompous, arrogant look about him.Ryan would love to punch that smug expression right off his face.
“Walters was caught with a large amount of cash and boxes of sedatives on him,” their commander said.“He had an entire dossier of women on his person, including names, prices, and dates of transactions. It’s believed that Walters was selling women to the Gulf Clan, the prominent cartel in the Darien Gap.It was born of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombias after it dissolved at the start of the century.Walters had a squeaky-clean reputation, but analysts dug deeper.”
“What’d they find?”Ryan asked as their CO changed slides.
“He’s deep in debt from bad investments. He’s underwater on his mortgages and luxury car payments.”
“Mortgages as in plural?”Sawyer asked.
“Affirmative. He’s also got a sex addiction. He’s spent large amounts of cash on porn sites.”
“Aw hell.I thought doctors were supposed to be smart,” Sawyer quipped.
Ryan shot him a look.
“Quiet down,” their commander reprimanded Sawyer.“His stupidity has paid off. When he delivered Avery, Luciana, and the sedatives to the Gulf Clan, he accidentally left his cell phone in the box of merchandise.”
Ryan’s eyes shot to his commander, and the man nodded.“We’re tracking them as we speak.”
Chapter 26
––––––––
WHEN AVERY AWOKE AGAIN, she was in an unfamiliar bedroom.Avery croaked out a cry for help, realizing the gag and restraints had been removed. She couldn’t move though.Couldn’t even roll over. Her body was so weak, she could barely even stay awake.Hardly function.
Her eyes took in the dimness. The big, old windows.Dusty curtains. It was nighttime, and moonlight shone through the panes of glass. Was Ryan looking at the same moon right now?
She felt a sharp pang of sadness that she’d never see him again.
Waves of dizziness began to wash over her as she fought to stay awake. She needed to focus.Take in the details of her surroundings.Memorize everything she could, so when she was stronger, she could escape.
There were footsteps outside the door, and hushed voices in the hallway, but for the moment, Avery was alone in the bedroom. She lay there still and silent, straining to hear what was going on.
The bedroom door opened, and the silhouette of a man stood there, outlined by the light from the hall.
