“Listen to him, Kendra, please,” Morgan said, giving a shaky smile. “I’ll be fine.”

No, you won’t, I thought with bitter resentment. Not unless we do something soon.

“Kendra, do this for me.Please,” Morgan begged.

Doubt flickered across Kendra’s face, then resignation. Shoulders sagging, she nodded. She turned back once more to her sister, sticking her hand through the cage. “I love you,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Morgan reached out and squeezed her hand back. “I love you, too,” she said. “Now, get out of here fast.”

“We’ll be back for you,” Chris told Morgan. “We’re going to get you out of there, and soon.”

Morgan nodded and gave a small, sad smile. “I’ll be waiting,” she said.

Chapter 17 - Kendra

Will didn’t speak to me the entire time we walked back to the house. We made our way quickly through the streets, and I could feel the anger radiating off him. I couldn’t blame him, but my mind was still fixated on Morgan, too filled with guilt and fear to worry about him at the moment.

When we got to the house, it was clear he was still livid. When all four of us got into the living room, he stared at me.

“Let me talk to Kendra alone,” he growled, not taking his eyes from mine.

Neither of the others needed me to say it twice. They disappeared up to their rooms in a flash.

I stood where I was, arms folded, chin held high as I looked up at him. With a furious growl, he stalked forward. I could practically feel the rage radiating off him. I took a deep breath and waited.

“Are you insane, or do you just have a death wish?” he snarled.

“I want to save my sister from getting mated to an evil human who will absolutely break her in a heartbeat,” I said.

“And you didn’t care about your safety?” he demanded.

“I care about Morgan’s safety,” I responded. “If I have to put myself in danger to save her, then I’ll do just that.”

He growled, running his fingers through his hair. “Do you realize that you could have completely jeopardized the mission by pulling a stunt like that?”

There it was. The damn stupid mission. I bristled as I glared at him.

“That’s all you care about, isn’t it?” I snapped. “Not about my sister’s safety, or about the fact that she’s going to be forced to mate with a sadistic asshole and a madman. You don’t even care about the fact that I left. The only reason you’re mad is because I jeopardized a mission that I don’t give two shits about in the first place.”

He stalked forward until he was only inches away from me. His blue eyes pierced into me, holding me in place so I couldn’t have moved even if I wanted to.

“I’ll talk in ways that you might understand, then,” he said, his voice low, almost sinister as he stared down at me. This close, it was impossible not to think about how large he was compared to me. Despite myself, despite the situation, I found myself remembering what it had been like when he had held me the other night, what those hands had felt like on my skin.

“You acting reckless and impulsive like that could have endangered your sister’s life,” he growled. “She was right to tell you to get out of there and to stay.”

“Refusing to help her put her in just as much danger,” I snapped. “You left her there with a possessive nut job who makes a fortune as a slaver. How the hell is that better than being on the run? For all we know, he’ll mate her, then get bored and kill her—or worse.”

“You didn’t think about any of the potential repercussions of breaking her out, did you?” he hissed. “If you had, you would have realized that until we get rid of Cain, until we come up with a concrete plan, she’s probably safer where she is.”

My mouth went dry. “How is breaking her out of there worse than leaving her with Cain?”

“Imagine if you’d succeeded,” he said. “You got her out of there. You even managed to get her through the portal and getto a witch who removed the enchantments. Do you really think Cain would let you run away with the woman he picked as his bride? He would hunt you to the ends of the earth. And the second he caught you, Morgan would be back in his clutches for good, no chance of her ever escaping. He’ll drag her everywhere by a chain for the rest of her life. And he’d kill you while your sister watched. Is that what you want?”

I opened my mouth, then closed it, unable to deny that he had a point. I could feel the tears threatening to come out, and I choked them back.

“I’m not going to give up,” I said, glaring up at him.

He growled, shaking his head as he started pacing back and forth. “If you keep this up, I swear to God I’m going to tie you to the bed to keep you from interfering.”
