“I’m glad.”
“You don’t have to worry about any of that. I swear it.”
“I won’t.” He kissed me, sealing that promise. “I just need you. As long as I have you and our son, I’ll be happy.”
“You have me. Always, Babygirl.”
And that was the sweetest, best retribution a girl could ask for. I hoped my father was looking down on us and smiling because I had never been happier in my life.
“MA, I’VE GOT BIG NEWS,” Bedlam informed Nan as she answered the phone the following morning.
“I’m going to finally be a grandma?”
Before he could answer, I did. “Yes!”
“Hallelujah! Son, you’ve been redeemed.”
Bedlam snorted. “Ma, I’m going to marry Ginny, and she’s having my son. You’re too far away.”
“Well, hell, get your ass here and move me to Vegas. I’m coming there to run your life, make you miserable, and be the best goddamn grandparent any kid has ever had.”
To say she was enthusiastic was an understatement.
So, two days later, we arrived in a U-Haul truck along with a dozen of Bedlam’s new club brothers.
Nan opened the door when we parked on the driveway. She didn’t rush her son. No, her attention focused on me. “Ginny! Darling, let’s get you inside and your feet up. You need to be pampered, and that’s my new job.”
Bedlam laughed. “What? No kiss for me, Ma?”
“No. Get to work.” She led me up the steps and then stopped, giving him a wicked smile. “Come kiss my cheek.”
He approached, and instead of lowering his head to place that kiss, he lifted his 5’2’’ mom and hoisted her in the air, swinging her around as she squealed. “Love you.”
“Love you, too,” she laughed. “Now let me enjoy this. I’ve waited forever for you to knock up some sweet girl and give me grandbabies.”
Ginny snickered. “Just some sweet girl?”
Nan rushed back to me and linked her arm through mine. “Shh. Can’t have him feeling left out even if I like you best right now.”
This woman.
We spent the afternoon watching the house full of bikers packing all of Nan’s things into the U-Haul. She ordered them all around, and they loved it.
In her kitchen, she prepared food. In crockpots, she had made hot chicken salad for sandwiches, taco meat for walking tacos, and cinnamon rolls with apples. Those bikers ate every morsel of food, and it made her day.
Nan, I realized, was never happier than when taking care of the people she loved. Someday, I hoped to be just like her. She was wonderful and loving and accepted me as her daughter the instant we met. Having her grandbaby made me her new favorite.
Of course, that just meant she had two because she’d always love her Brick the most, even if he did change his name to something crazy. I laughed hard when she told him that.
Getting settled in Las Vegas was easy.
Nan already owned a second house, and she moved right into it. From what I understood, Nan bought it to be close to him once he got his head out of his ass, found a good girl, settled down, and had babies. I guess we made that dream come true.
I sat on the front porch across from her, watching her swing as she sipped lemonade. It felt weird not to work, and I didn’t want to waste the degree I worked so hard for, but I didn’t mind taking time off since this pregnancy took a toll.
I continued to have morning sickness and fatigue until the fifth month when our baby grew and I began to show. Bedlam took every opportunity to touch me, talk to our baby, rub my stomach, and spoil me to the point of excess.
“When is Ciara coming?”
