Chapter One
“Are you ready for tomorrow?”
Logan’s head jerked up to find his friend and business partner, Daniel, leaning a shoulder against the doorjamb of his office.
“Yeah, I am.I’ve been ready to marry that woman for a long damn time.”Logan leaned back in his chair, relaxed, raised his legs up on his desk, and crossed them at the ankles.
“Is Layla driving you crazy with the last-minute stuff?”Daniel couldn’t believe how calm Logan was one day before his wedding.
“Layla and her sister are the most laid-back women I’ve ever met. They don’t like drama of any kind. They’ve had it kind of rough.Their father died when they were young, and their mother tried to fill the void of losing her husband with a lot of boyfriends. After she died, her daughters went into foster care. They had to learn how to adapt quickly. It amazes me that they’re as grounded and happy as they are.”
Logan narrowed his eyes and stared hard at Daniel.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”Daniel asked suspiciously.
“I can’t wait for you to meet Layla’s sister.”
A scowl marred Daniel’s forehead, and his body stiffened.“Don’t even think about trying to hook us up.You know I’m done with women for the moment.”
Logan snorted.“I’m not going to hook you up.You’re going to do that yourself.”
Daniel frowned.“What the hell do you mean by that?”
“I’m saying Layla’s sister, Keira, is incredibly beautiful and very sweet. She’s also intelligent and hardworking. If there is an attraction between the two of you, you’d be an idiot not to give it a chance.Women like this only come along every so often, and some men never get the chance you’re being given.”
Daniel stood and shoved his hands into his pockets.“You know I just broke it off with Tammy not too long ago.I can’t see myself in another relationship right now.”
Logan pulled his legs from the desk and sat up, put his elbows on the surface in front of him, and leaned forward.“Tammy was a needy drama queen. But you have to know not every woman is like that.My Layla definitely isn’t.”
“Layla is special, I’ll give you that.”Daniel relaxed and leaned against the doorjamb again. He was happy for his friend, but he admitted to himself that he was a little envious, too.“My last few girlfriends have been clingy.Never happy with the time I gave them.My downtime is limited because of our security business. They just don’t seem to get that.I can’t win.”
“You just haven’t met the right woman yet.”
Daniel snorted.“Not everyone is a lucky bastard like you.Layla pretty much fell into your lap when she moved to town and opened her women’s lingerie store uptown. What do you think the chances were of you meeting her if she hadn’t called about putting in a security alarm in her store?”
“Oh, I think we would have found each other no matter what.I feel like it was destiny.”
A chuckle of disbelief ran from Daniel’s mouth.“Never in a million years would I have ever thought you were a romantic kind of guy.”
Logan smirked.“I wasn’t, until Layla.”
Daniel caught the pen Logan threw at him and laughed.
“What time will you be at the rehearsal tonight?”Logan asked.
“I should be done with the Anderson job on time, so I’ll be there at six.”
“We’re meeting at the church. It will be important for the best man to be there. After the rehearsal, we’ll all go to the restaurant for dinner.”
“Who is going to be at the rehearsal and dinner?”Daniel asked as he walked forward and tossed the pen on the desk.
“Layla, Keira, you, and me.My parents and sister. We invited the Sandersons, the couple helping with music, and the reverend and his wife to dinner, but I’m not sure they’ll come.”
“What about Layla’s family?”
“I already told you their mother died several years ago. There are no other siblings, cousins, aunts, or uncles.”
Daniel nodded and raised his hand as he turned to leave.“I’ll see you there.”
