“I know.I just need a little time.I was hoping to be able to wait until Layla got home.”
Vicki shook her head.“I don’t think that’s a good idea, dear, but we’ll talk after your nap.”
Chapter Twenty-Three
“Conner, this is Daniel.Hey, man, I need a favor. Can you have someone sit outside and watch Keira’s house until I get there?I’m about forty-five minutes away, and I don’t want her to be there without someone close.”
“I’m off now.I’ll do it.I feel I owe it to her.”
“Thanks, man.I have eyes outside her house.I’ll call if I see anything.”
“I’m not even going to ask if she knows her house is being surveilled.”
“She doesn’t...”
A sound of disgust spewed from Conner’s mouth.“I told you not to tell me.”
“But she won’t let me close right now, and I have to protect her somehow.”
“I agree from a boyfriend’s standpoint, but as a cop, I cringe at the laws you’re breaking.”
“I won’t tell you anything else.”
“Too late.I hope we get some evidence soon.I have three different detectives on the case. And the captain isn’t happy with all the resources we’re using.”
“It’s driving me crazy.Who the hell hates her this much? She’s only been in town a short time.”
“I have a suspicion.Keira’s story is very similar to Tammy’s, and as far as I know, they’ve never met. What if it’s the same guy?We have to consider this isn’t really directed at the women, but to get back at you for something.”
Daniel paused.“Shit, that is a possibility I didn’t consider.”
“Get some names of people who might have a grudge against you, and I’ll run them tomorrow.”
“On it.Thanks, I owe you.”
