Chapter Twenty-Four
“Run to the grey caron the other side of the street and lock yourself in.Help is on the way.I’m going to try to find him.Now go.”He pushed her in the direction of the street and started searching for the guy.The sirens were getting louder, and he knew when he heard the screeching of tires, he’d have backup in seconds. He yelled for the men running into the house, some came with him, and others stayed outside to search.
Five minutes later, they knew he’d gotten away somehow, but with the amount of blood he was trailing behind him, he was injured.
Conner ran outside. He ignored everyone shouting to him and the phone ringing on his belt, knowing it was Daniel. His only thought was to get to Keira. She’d had so much blood on her.Shock raced through him.His car was empty. He ran frantically from car to car on the street, thinking she had misunderstood and gotten into someone else’s car.
His heart jerked in his chest.Where the hell was she? There’s no way that bastard could have gotten her without Conner hearing, and how fast the cops got there. There just hadn’t been time, so that meant she walked off.He ran into the yard again and looked for droplets of blood that she might have trailed behind. He started cussing when everyone got in his way.
“People!”He finally whistled shrilly to get their attention.“Keira’s missing.I think she walked off.I need flashlights and a search. We’ve got to get to her fast. She was losing a lot of blood.”
“There’s blood here,” a voice yelled.
Conner ran to it and started looking for another clue, a drop of blood to tell him where she’d gone.Several minutes went by, and he was starting to panic.
“Over here.”
Conner turned and ran for the spot the cop indicated. His heart just about stopped. She had crawled under the porch step of the house across the street and scrunched herself into a ball.He pushed people out of the way.Jesus, there was blood everywhere, and he didn’t know whose blood it was—hers or the assailant’s.He gently pulled her into his arms.He was grateful she was unconscious because any move had to be painful for her.He gently laid her on the gurney the paramedics had waiting.
“Where’s the blood coming from?”
“You tell me, you’re the medic,” Conner snarled. He wouldn’t let go of her hand and got cussed at because he was in the way, but he didn’t care.He wasn’t letting loose until a doctor or Daniel got here.Oh, shit.He pulled out his phone and waited until they had her in the ambulance, taking her vitals and starting an IV before he dialed Daniel’s number.
“What the hell is going on?”Daniel bellowed when he answered.
“She’s been hurt, we’re headed to the hospital right now.”
“How bad?”
“Bad.”
“Who was it?”
Conner paused.“We don’t know, he ran before I could get to him.”
“What the fuck, Conner?”
“Listen, I’ll tell you the whole story when you get to the hospital.Just come as quickly as you can.”Conner pushed his phone in his pocket and let his eyes look at the damage that had been done to this beautiful woman. He didn’t think he’d ever forgive himself as long as he lived.
She’d told him about the stalker, and at first, he hadn’t believed her.He knew it was because of Daniel’s ex-girlfriend, but he still should have done more. When he realized she was telling the truth, he started an investigation, but hadn’t made any progress, and then this happened.
He needed to make this up to her, but he hadn’t a clue how to do that.
