Chapter Twenty-Five

Daniel arrived at thehospital just minutes behind the ambulance.He rushed into the emergency room to the desk at the back.

“I’m here for the woman they just brought in.”

“Okay, can you fill out this paperwork?”

“What the hell.I need to see Keira Walker.”

“She’s in a room right now.You can’t go back there.They’ll come to get you when they get her stabilized.”

“Like hell they will.”He stormed past the desk and through swinging doors.He ignored the woman behind him, trying to get his attention.A hand jerked him around, and he was ready to take a swing when Conner stepped in and showed the security man his badge.

“He’s with me,” Conner yelled, holding up his badge.

Daniel turned toward Conner.“What’s happening?”Daniel couldn’t seem to take a breath, and knew he wouldn’t be able to fill his lungs until he saw her and knew she would be fine.

“She’s in with the doctors and nurses.They have several people working on her.”

“Is she that bad?”

“There was a lot of blood, man.I couldn’t tell where it was coming from.I don’t think all of it is hers.”

Daniel leaned against the wall across from where they were working on her, hoping to get a glimpse of her.“I did this.”

“No, you didn’t, man.”

Conner could say that a hundred times, and he would still blame himself.

“How much blood do you think he lost?”

“There was a pretty good amount.”

“I pulled over on the side of the road when you said you heard her screaming.”Daniel slid a hand down his face.He knew grief was apparent in his expressions, his tone of voice, and the shaking he couldn’t control, but didn’t care.“Have they found evidence to show who it might be?”

“No, man, not yet.We have the entire team there, gathering as much evidence as possible.They’ll find something.The fact that we have his blood for DNA is huge.Hopefully, he’s in the system.”

“I can’t lose her, Conner.I know I don’t deserve her, but I can’t let her go.”
