Chapter Thirty

Keira swirled her spoonin her broth a few times before letting it fall.

Daniel caught her grimace.“What’s wrong, Honey?”

“I’m mad because this broth is yucky. Can I have one of your French fries?”

He chuckled and handed her a fry.“Eat it.One isn’t going to matter, and it’s a small one, so I think you can find room in your stomach for it.But you can’t tell the doc.He scares the shit out of me.”

Keira laughed and took small bites of the fry, savoring it before collapsing back against her pillow and closing her eyes to rest. They had raised the head of the bed, so she was able to eat, and it felt good to change positions.

After their lunch, the nurse suggested they take a short walk after she let their food settle a bit.She knew she’d get help from Daniel and Layla, but the thought both scared and excited her.She wanted out of bed so badly, but was afraid she was too weak to have her legs support her.

Layla was picking up the fast-food sacks when the door opened, admitting Conner with a leather overnight bag.

“Hey, guys.”Conner shook Logan’s hand.“I’m glad to see you’re back, but sick about what you came back to.”Conner turned toward Keira, surprised and pleased she was sitting up and smiling at something Daniel was saying.“How’s she doing?”Conner whispered to Layla.

“The doctor said she would be able to go home in the next few days.”

Anger transformed Conner’s face, and he hesitated.“She’s not going to be able to go back to the house until professional cleaners come in.”

Layla shivered at the implication.

“I have a feeling she won’t be stepping back in that house again anyway,” Logan said.

“Why?”

He tossed his head toward the bed.“That man won’t let her.”

Layla’s stomach tightened with dread.“What if she refuses? Can she come stay with us?”

Logan pulled Layla against him and kissed the top of her head.“Your sister is always welcome. But I have a feeling she’ll give in.The connection they have is too strong for her to walk away from.”

Conner tossed the bag in the nearest chair.“I hope you’re right.I feel I’m partly to blame for this situation.”

Layla’s gaze was puzzled.“How?”

Conner turned to Layla.“I was the cop she came to, and I told her there wasn’t a lot we could do, but we would look into it.I think she took that to mean we weren’t going to help her.I was also the one who had to try to talk her out of a gun permit. After I said she shouldn’t get a gun, she closed down, and I don’t think she heard anything else I said.”

“I’m actually kind of glad about that. She’s never touched one in her life.I’m afraid she might have shot herself, or the guy would have taken it from her and shot her.”

“That’s what I tried to tell her.The statistics for that happening are extremely high.”

“I pray they catch the guy soon.”

Logan kissed Layla’s temple and grinned.“I married a smart woman.”

“Hell, yeah, you did, you both found good women. Now, if only they had another sister for me.”Conner heard them chuckle as he walked toward the bed.“How are you feeling, Keira?”

Keira looked at the man.She felt she should know him but couldn’t remember.“I’m feeling much better, thank you.”
