Chapter Thirty-Two
“Who...?”
All eyes turned toward Keira as she struggled to open her eyes.
Daniel picked up her hand carefully.“We were talking about how special you are.”
Keira looked unfocused at each of them. She couldn’t come up with any words, and for some reason, she wanted to cry.Bits and pieces of the nightmare last night still ate at her and frightened her.Her gaze raced to the doctor’s.“Did you drug me again?”
She watched Daniel look at Dr.Paulson getting his approval before turning his gaze to Layla, then back to Keira.
“Yeah, Baby. You had a pretty bad nightmare and were very agitated. We were afraid you’d pull your IV out or fall out of bed.”
She was still confused.“Why did it affect me like that?I’ve never had a nightmare that bad.”
The doctor took a step toward the bed, getting Keira’s attention.“Your memory will sometimes come forth when you’re asleep because your subconscious is relaxed.”
Keira’s hand tightened on Daniel’s, and she cringed at the pull of stitches.
Daniel bent and rubbed his thumb over the frown that pulled her eyebrows together.“Don’t worry. We’ll keep a close watch on you, so if it happens again, we’ll be there.”
“You can’t be with me all the time.I’ll be able to go home soon, right?”Her thoughts were all over the place, and she couldn’t seem to concentrate on just one.
“Yes, I think later today, young lady, if not early tomorrow.”
A streak of fear dashed through her as she looked back at Daniel’s anxious expression.Keira cleared her throat.“See.I don’t want you to worry about me.I’m sure if I do have a nightmare, being at home will help calm me.”
Daniel kissed her forehead.“Let’s talk about this in a minute.”
The tension in the air grew thicker.Keira looked from one person to another. Each face had different degrees of apprehension. Some dark feeling in her core was pushing forward. She needed to get home so she could figure out this unreasonable feeling of fear.“I don’t want a sedative again. It makes me feel very tired and weak.”
“I’m going to prescribe an antianxiety med for you.It won’t make you nearly as sleepy.I want you to take it every day, even if you’re feeling okay.Make an appointment in a month so they can assess you and determine if you’ll need further medication.I need everyone to step out so I can check her stitches and make sure last night didn’t loosen them.”He looked at Daniel and held up his hand.“Yes, I know, you’re not leaving, just stay out of the way.”
“I’ll check in with you later, Daniel.Call if you need anything,” Conner said and raised his hand.
Daniel nodded. He had gotten a glimpse of her injuries the night before when the nurses had quickly checked after the nightmare, but seeing her injuries in the clarity of daytime made it look so much worse.
The doctor focused on her.“Well, Miss. You have tugged on a few of them, but I was going to take them out later anyway.I’ll put bandages on the ones that still look a little tender. But it all looks really good.If anything starts oozing, turns red, or gets more tender, make an appointment with your family doctor right away. With the antibiotics we’re giving you, you shouldn’t have any problems with infection.Nurse, you can ask everyone in again.”
Logan and Layla came through the door.Layla looked at her sister with concern.“How does it look, Doctor?”
“Very good. After breakfast, I’ll have the nurses take the IV out, and then when I come back this afternoon, I’ll take the stitches out.I want her to eat, get up, and walk a bit.I don’t want her exhausted, but she’ll tire out quickly, so be careful.”
The door opened, and a small, older, cheerful dietary nurse came in carrying Keira’s breakfast.“Wow.You’re having a party, and I wasn’t invited?”
Keira and everyone in the room laughed.
