She was startled when tears sparkled in Daniel’s eyes.“Maybe because you didn’t think you could trust me and felt alone.”

“How?I know we don’t know each other that well, but I can’t imagine myself not trusting you.”

Daniel wrapped an arm around her shoulders and kissed the top of her head.“I have a lot to tell you, but we’ll have time to figure it out later.”

A streak of chilling dread coursed up her spine as Keira looked worriedly at Layla across the room.It had to have been something bad to get that look on her sister’s face.

Daniel used his fingers to tilt her head back a little farther.“Don’t worry.It’ll all work out.”He pressed his mouth to hers, slowly as if afraid he’d hurt her.

Keira sat back and sighed.“I’m going to rest for a bit.I’m hoping the nurses will be in shortly and I can take a shower.”

Daniel helped her lower her bed.“If you can’t, I’ll give you a sponge bath.”

Keira laughed when Daniel’s eyebrows wiggled.“We’ll have to see about that.”

Chapter Thirty-Four

Two nurses came inan hour later.As each IV tube was taken out, she felt a new level of freedom.

“Can I take a shower?”she asked.

“Not yet.You have to wait for Dr.Paulson to take the stitches out, then a nurse will help you.”

“Or I can help you,” Layla said.

“I’ll do it,” Daniel interrupted roughly, making everyone in the room turn and stare at him.“Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound harsh.”

The nurses finished and rolled the IV stand out of the room.One nurse tucked the blanket around Keira.“We’ll be in to check on you.If you need us, push the ‘call’ button.”

“Thank you.”Daniel sat on the side of her bed facing her.

Keira looked intently at Daniel.“Can you tell me how long we’ve been dating?I know it hasn’t been long.”

A muscle twitched on the side of Daniel’s jaw.

“About two months.”
