“Where is he going?” I ask, turning back to the rest of the men at the table.

“To make them leave. Betty might have seen one of them. It’s probably nothing, but they have risked enough,” Chester says.

“How do you know that?”

He taps the side of his head in response. “Since you have been back, he can sometimes kinda know what people are thinking. It’s random and not consistent,” Trace replies before Chester can.

Brennan is back at the table within minutes. “Creed and Trace, I need you to help me get them out of here unseen. Chester, you and Kai are to keep an eye on Jolie until we have finished.”

Chester nods as Creed and Trace jump up from the table and disappear with Brennan.

“I’m going to dance again. Want to join me?” I ask Chester, batting my eyelashes in the hope he agrees.

“Not in a million fucking years.” He shakes his head. “I’ll stand here and watch.”

I take another sip of my water and head onto the dance floor. The old school songs and dancing haven’t stopped and they’re now up to Michael Jackson. Colt and Kai are in a dance battle over the best moonwalk. Everyone cheers them on, but I can only laugh at how ridiculous they look. They’ve also both ditched their masks at this point as sweat drips down their faces.

“Come on, Jolie!” Colt shouts over the music. “Show us your moves.”

“No way.” I shake my head and back away from them.

“Are you chicken?Cluck, cluck.”

I bend down and undo my heels—my feet could use a break anyway—and once they’re off, Jimmie reaches out and takes them from me. I turn my back to them and scrunch up my dress on either side to stop me from tripping on it and slide backwards.

“What was that?!” Danika wheezes as hysterical laughter falls from her lips.

“Hey, it wasn’t that bad,” I say, trying again, but this time I stumble and Kai races to my side.

“Are you okay?” he asks, not letting me go.

“Just a bit dizzy, I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll get you some fresh water.”

“Please.” He makes sure I’m balanced before he releases me. Colt moves in closer to my side and Kai nods at him before rushing off to the bar.

“Alright, Jolie, it’s time to get your chicken dance on.”

Colt whistles, and the DJ changes the song. Who decided to put Colt in charge of the music? Regardless, I’m sure they’re regretting it now.

Flapping my elbows to the music while Colt does the same, my head spins and I feel a million miles away. I realise I’m about to fall a split second before it happens, but then the lights cut out. Our descent into darkness is punctuated by the ramblings of everyone wondering what happened.

As I try to call out for help, my lips refuse to move and desperation claws at my throat. Suddenly someone is picking me up.

“Shhh,” an unknown voice whispers in my ear. “You’ll be okay.”

The struggle leaves my body, and everything goes black... but I swear right before my eyes fall shut, I hear someone calling my name.

Chapter Twenty-One

Brennan

Creed and Trace leave with our brothers piled in the back of the van. The party is about to wrap up anyway, so it’s not like they’re going to miss anything important. I don’t doubt Betty knows about Team Hades. She’s a smart woman, though her entire team is nothing but brawn except Jimmie, who is smarter than all of them combined. How he ended up in their team is still a mystery to everyone. We will need to question her, but for now, I need to get back upstairs. I’m in the service lift, designated for staff use, when the lights flicker. The lift creaks to a halt and then everything goes pitch black.

I push the lift’s telephone button, but nothing happens. Pulling my phone from my pocket, I try to call Chester. When he doesn’t answer, I try again, but just like the previous time, it goes to voicemail.

Next, I try Kai, who answers on the fourth ring.
