“Starving, I really want sweet potato fries.”

“I know a good burger place. Let’s go.”

“Wait for me, fuckers,” Laughn says, striding towards us. “You two look cute together.”

“Jealous?” Davis questions, and Laughn laughs.

“Not a chance, because we look fucking perfect.”

Davis, Laughn, and I all go for burgers. I only manage to eat my sweet potato fries, but it’s nice to just relax for a little while and not have to think about babies, rebuilding Olympia, or alpha men who forgot how to share after kindergarten.

Chapter Five

Chester

I have a plan. Since we are no closer to any answers about the babies and what the fuck Mr Z has created, we need to get our minds off anything and everything Olympia.

Not just that, though. Anytime someone touches Jolie or even looks in her direction, I lose it. While I don’t know how to control it, distractions are always good, and I have planned out the entire day. I even went and purchased some damn puke bags. Jolie’s morning sickness has been getting better, but I made sure I thought of everything.

As I walk into the kitchen, Petra smiles at me. I ran my idea past her last night, and she was more than happy to help.

“Just the man I was looking for,” she chirps.

“I don’t have many ladies telling me that when I walk in the room,” I laugh, and even at her age, she blushes. Petra has been around for as long as I can remember—she is like a grandmother to us all.

“There are four picnic baskets, two coolers, and I have packed you all towels and blankets. I also sent you the link for the rock pools and about ten minutes away from there is the best milkshake place. I have known Mrs Watson for years, and she can pick your flavour just from looking at you.”

“You’re the best,” I tell her. If I was a hugger, I would give her one right now, but she knows me well enough to understand that conversing with her is as friendly as I get.

My phone starts playing “Nutz on ya Chin” by Eazy E. Fucking Kai and his stupidity.

“Are you going to answer that or just crush it in your hand?”

I blink through my annoyance and look down at the phone I’m practically squeezing. My cousin’s name flashes across the screen.

“Hey Scar,” I say, answering the call. “Any luck getting your mum on board to help us?”

“Unfortunately not, but I have managed to find some of her old research, which could be of use to us. It’s from your team and how they approached learning what you were capable of. You probably have access to that, but these are her personal notes, and there may be something we have missed.”

“At least it’s something—it’s driving me fucking crazy not knowing. Have you considered my job offer yet?” I ask her. I want her to come and work for us; she might be young, but she has potential.

“I really don’t know. It’s a huge move. You know when Mum left Olympia, she relocated halfway across the country to get away, so me coming back would be a huge kick in the guts.”

“She does know we killed that fucker, right?”

“It’s the principle to her. She didn’t agree with how much he would push his subjects, and until she has solid proof that will no longer happen, I don’t think she’ll be okay with it.”

“You’re twenty-one, Scar—an adult. This is a good opportunity to have your education taken care of and to get paid what someone ten years your senior is earning. I wouldn’t put my ass on the line for just anyone.”

The line goes silent for a few seconds. “I know, and I am weighing up my options. How is Jolie?”

“Stunning as ever, even when her head is halfway down the toilet bowl. My chest gets warm every time I lock eyes with her.”

“Awe, little chestnut is in love,” she teases, and I grind my teeth.

“Don’t fucking call me that,” I seethe, and she just laughs at me. The bitch. “I have to go, but hurry and get your ass down here. You know I need someone I trust helping me with this shit.”

“Okay, I’ll talk to Mum about it tonight and get back to you. TTYL.”
