“You know my plans to look for Trace.”

This time he reacts, pausing, and I stop walking too, turning back to face him.

“Has he contacted you at all since I have known you?”

“Nope, He... he... I don’t know. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that I plan to find him.”

“Do you want to get changed, and I will order in some dinner? I gave Petra the night off since the boys are training.”

“Sure, what are they training for?”

“Life,”is his cryptic response before pulling out his phone.

Chapter Eleven

Brennan

I order in Chinese, get dressed, and then head back downstairs to wait for the food. I get pissed off every time she calls Trace her best friend. It’s a good story—a believable one. He was one of her handlers and she was his first job out of training.

After a year, Jolie and I have grown close, or as close as someone can get to a girl with her walls so high. Honestly, she never really lets anyone in.

She was barely a teenager when she left. Every single one of the guys in the team loved her. I was training to be their handler. They think I was the only one willing to take the job, but unknown to them, I was specifically trained to oversee their team.

I hated the jealousy I felt being around them. They were a solid unit; all six of them worked as one. I hated I didn’t have that, and I despised the love they had for her. Why did they get to love her the way they did, but I couldn’t?

I tried to delay her coming back into this life—I wanted her all to myself. Mr Z has wanted a DNA test done for quite some time and I had found every excuse imaginable, now I have run out of time. The doctor she is going to see is one of ours, and he will extract a blood sample at her appointment. It won’t be long until Mr Z knows the truth.

There have been so many times over the last year, I planned to tell her who I was, but that would have sealed my fate.

They all think they have a choice to walk away, but they couldn’t be more wrong. They were born and bred for a purpose. There is so much they don’t know yet, even my brother. I know he will hate me when he finds out. If he doesn’t kill me with his own hands first.

Ding dong.

I walk barefoot over to the door, and the young delivery guy looks me up and down before handing me the brown paper bag. We don’t exchange any pleasantries; he just turns and walks back to his car.

“I smell food,” Jolie yells from the top of the stairs before eagerly hurrying down to me. I try to look away as her breasts bounce up and down, but having her here under my parents’ roof, as well as no longer being someone she believes is in charge, has me looking at her in a different light.

She isn’t wearing a bra under her cut-off shirt. I see the way she takes me in, my only layer of clothing a thin pair of grey cotton pants.

The lust in her eyes turns me on. I know it’s wrong to want her to feel something for me before she finds out everything, and I’m sure she will one way or another. She is too smart for her own good.

The look in her eyes is gone as quickly as it was there.

“Thanks,” she says, taking the bag from my hand and racing towards the media room.

I follow behind her slowly, grateful for the alone time.

I sent the guys to train; they need to get out of their heads for a while. Finding out about Jolie has put them off mentally, yet another test set forth by Mr Z.

He thinks he is smart, but I know his game.

They are his super team, and he will throw everything at them. To prove that they can overcome any obstacle. To prove his experiment worked. And more importantly, to gain approval to make more super teams.

“Hurry and sit down before I eat all the chicken.” Jolie has all the containers open and spread out across the floor. I laugh when she tries to use the chopsticks to grab a piece of chicken and fails miserably, finally stabbing it and popping it in her mouth.

“What are we watching?” I ask, taking a seat beside her. She is close enough I can feel the heat from her skin.

“Nothing—I’m not really in the mood for anything. I miss Trace.” The tone in her voice wobbles as she holds back tears.
