“What? You asked!”

“I can’t hear you!” She spins on her heel and walks back into the living room.

I chase after her and call, “It’s only fair, you’ve seen me. I want to see you!”

“In your dreams!”

“Is that a promise?”

“Oh my god!” she groans, but I can hear the hint of a giggle in her tone.

I laugh loudly in response as she opens the fridge and she sprays a mouthful of whipped cream into her mouth. Her hazel eyes meet mine, and I sputter out a small chuckle.

“Don’t you even?—”

“Your last boyfriend was a lucky man,” I say suggestively.

“Theodore!” She runs toward me, and I book it toward the plush white couch. “Why are you such a perv!?”

“I can’t help it,” I chuckle while leaping over the cushions to escape her wrath.

She jumps on the couch and plants her foot against the back, aiming to launch herself at me.

“Why are you running?”

“Why are you pointing the whipped cream nozzle at me?”

“I’m not pointing it at you.”

“No?”

She shakes her head and gives me a saccharine smile. “I’m being good. You’re the one running and causing trouble.”

“I only ran becauseyouran toward me.”

“Do I scare you?” she asks with a lifted brow.

“You terrify me, woman.”

She cackles. “Younger me would be so proud.” She inches toward me, preparing to charge again.

“Don’t move, Wren.” I attempt to threaten her, but it’s weak, at best. “I just got out of the shower.”

“Oh, well, if that’s the case.” She drops her stance, and my muscles relax.

Giving me no time to react, she jumps forward and clings to my back, pressing the nozzle to my cheek. Compressed airhits my skin, and she leans against my ear before whispering, “Gotcha.”

Turning my head, she smacks her lips against my face with an obnoxious “Muah.”

I know she doesn’t mean it in the way my mind wants to perceive, but damn, my heart stutters.

Wren Jacob has always had a piece of my heart, and most days, it’s easy to dismiss my feelings toward her. But moments like this? I can’t help but let my gaze linger over her, picturing what it might be like to be more than friends.
