Without waiting, Theo turns around, and he narrows his eyes, the playful glint unmistakable. “Oh, I’m pretty satisfied, trust me. But if I knew you were hiding all this”—he gestures with an exaggerated sweep—“I might’ve begged sooner.”
A laugh escapes before I can stop it, and he steps closer, brushing his fingers over my shoulder, leaning in to murmur, “But just so you know, Wren, I’m not done yet.”
I purse my lips, trying to hold back a smile. “Theo, make yourself useful and zip me up again.”
“Was I not useful earlier?” he grumbles as I turn around.
Once I’m sucked back into the dress, I place the shirt over my head and face him again.
“Remember when you were screaming my name? Theo! Theo! Theo?—”
I cut him off with a kiss, and he moans in surprise. Smiling against his lips, I giggle in response. “You’re trouble, Theodore Torres.”
His expression softens, and he asks the question I’ve been daring to ask myself. “What now?”
“I’m not sure,” I admit.
“What do you want?”
You.
I want this. Your gaze in mine, the fluttering, the warmth, the laughs, smiles, subtle and not so subtle touches. “I want?—”
“Theo, are you in there?” Malory calls from outside the room.
“Her timing never ceases to amaze me,” he sighs. “¡No hablo Inglés!”
“¿Estas ahí?”
“Sorry, I don’t speak Spanish,” he says.
“I’m going to kick you into next year!”
With a groan, he starts toward the door, but I stop him by grabbing his wrist. “We’ll talk later.”
After I kiss his cheek, he blushes and lets his Mom in with a gleam in his eyes.
“What are you—” She takes a mental step back when she sees me. “It’s finally happened,” she mutters, and Theo and I furrow our brows. “I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner. I’ve prepared for the day when I walk in on you and Wren.”
“No.” I’m quick to deny it.
“You’ve lost your mind,” Theo says.
“If I didn’t catch you two in the act, then why is your bra on the floor, and why are you wearing one of my son’s old shirts?”
“My boobs were hurting,” I groan.
“Yeah, you should see the marks,” he jokes.
“Theo!” Malory and I shout at the same time, and his eyes widen.
“That was terrifying.” He gulps.
“That’s what you get.” I slap his arm while walking past him.
“Where are you going?” he calls after me.
“To be social! Take a page out of her book!” Mal shouts as Theo follows me.
