Jesus! Fucking son of a bitch.I grab my phone out of my pocket and place a call to Thunder. It rings out. Same happens when I try to get Hellfire. Nothing fucking works. Then, I notice, I have no signal.
No chance to give a warning. “You alright, Vi? Are you okay to walk? Need to get somewhere I can make a call.”
She’s overwhelmed for concern for her son. “I need to get to Theo.” With no regard for her safety of what she might find outside, she’s already making her way to the door.
I waste only the seconds it takes for me to growl, “You keep him for me, Lucio. We had a deal, remember.” Then, my desire for revenge having to be put on the back burner, I steer Violet through the throng of Mafia men, some disarmed, some standing guard, and out of that house.
Thank fuck! Dan has had the presence of mind to drive the truck closer. I almost throw her inside.
“Bomber.” I run to where he’s hidden, taking my cut. “Get everyone back to the compound. Lucio’s men can clean up here. Angel’s arranged an attack.”
Rusty’s already moving to round the rest of them up.
“Shift.” I motion for Dan to move over, then take over the driver’s seat, throwing my cut onto the back seat. “Keep ringing everyone in the club, Brother. Need to know what the fuck is going on.”
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Violet
Angel’s unsheathed cock is prodding at my backside. So close, I brace myself for the invasion, which despite all my efforts, I have failed to fight off. Though tensing will make the tearing worse, my body instinctively wants to continue the battle. I’m still trying to twist away, trying to do anything to stop him forcing his way inside when, suddenly, he’s ripped away from me. I hear ‘oomph’s, a shout of pain, then, so fast I have barely enough time to take a deep breath, my dress is tugged down to cover my bare ass and another body is lying over me. My fear for myself immediately flees, the scent that comes to me telling me it’s Demon.
He’s found me.
He’s here. Safe. Not at the compound. But, Theo? It was my first, my only thought. Ignoring whatever question he’d asked me, I cry out, “Angelino’s men are going to attack. They’re going to blow it up. He’s already arranged it, D, Theo…”
He takes out his phone. I’m beside myself when it’s clear he’s getting no answer. Then he growls and asks, “You alright, Vi? Are you okay to walk? Need to get somewhere I can make a call.”
I’d run out naked, right now I don’t give a damn. “I’ve got to get to Theo.”
While I know he must hate leaving Angelino among men I don’t recognise, I’m just relieved when thoughts for my son’s safety take priority over getting the revenge he must crave. He races me down the stairs and out to a truck. That he, himself, takes over the driving shows how much he shares my concern.
Dan keeps placing calls, but there’s no answer, no response. My fears escalate each time he turns to Demon and shakes his head.Theo.My hand rests over my fast-beating heart, thinking again, if he was gone, wouldn’t I as a mother know? Wouldn’t my heart just stop? A cry escapes my mouth.
“Vi,” Demon starts, then stops, his hands hitting the steering wheel, then hitting it again. There’s nothing he can say. It’s not just Theo. The club’s on lockdown. Everyone who isn’t with him is there. His mom, dad, and the men he calls brothers, as well as those from other chapters.
“God dammit!” Demon roars with frustration as he comes up behind a slow-moving vehicle. Then he yanks on the wheel and overtakes in a manoeuvre for which I’d usually admonish any driver. He’s cut it close, there’s a truck coming from the opposite direction; we slide past back into our lane missing it by just inches. A loud and extended angry honk sounds.
Dan’s hanging onto the oh-shit handle, his face looks white as I catch sight of it in the rearview mirror. Neither of us say anything; I don’t care how Demon drives. If Theo… If he’s not there, I’d rather die without knowing.
We’re on the freeway. Now Demon puts his foot down, and I watch the speedometer rising, looking nervously around to check there are no traffic cops near, relieved when at last we’re off the main drag and heading toward the clubhouse. I start craning my neck to see and spot smoke rising.
“Shit!” Demon bangs the steering wheel again, then turns the truck violently into gates which are hanging off their hinges. There’s a truck that’s crashed into a row of bikes.
The place is a mess. For a split second we’re all stunned. The front of the clubhouse seems to be missing, the doorway blocked by yet another crashed truck. Flames are leaping behind what were windows. Bodies lying all around.
“Stay here!” Demon barks. “You stay with her, Prospect!”
No fucking way! He must be mad.I reach for the door handle and throw myself out. Dan’s just as fast, his strong arms come around me holding me back. Struggling in his arms with tears streaming down my face, I watch as men and women come running down the fire escape at the side of the clubhouse; I can see the club girls rushing down but no Theo.
I need to get to them, to find someone and ask…
“Hell!” Demon thunders, running forward.
I’m not proud of myself, but I’m a desperate mom. I kick hard at Dan’s shins, surprising him. He loosens his arms and I run forward.
“Prez,” Dan roars.
Swinging around fast, Demon catches me. I try the same tactic on him, but he’s better prepared and avoids my feet. His arms are like iron bars imprisoning me. I scream, kick, flail, but I can’t get free.
