Worthless.
Weak.
Desperate to escape, I ran past Tristan and Matthew and out the front door, stumbling down the porch steps. Shaking with sobs, I wrapped my arms around my middle and tried to decide which way to go.
I could throw myself at the mercy of the royal pack, but the king and queen didn't need to be burdened with me. My brothers might take me back, but Green River was hundreds of miles away, and I had no way to get there. I didn't even consider taking one of my mates' cars. Even if I knew how to drive, nothing of theirs was mine.
Not anymore.
Maybe it never had been.
Lark, we'll run into the wild.
We be dead in a day if we go alone, she warned me.
We're dead, anyway. The mate bond breaking will kill us. And if it doesn't, I'll do it myself.
No, Posy, she begged. No! Jayden and Mason still—
I'm done, Lark. I'mdone. I don't want to do this anymore.
Whimpering, she pulled into a tight ball in the back of my mind and wept.
It was clear that everything Alpha Briggs had said about me was right. I wasn't worthy of happiness or love. He'd tried to beat the knowledge into me, but some small part of me clung to the belief that he was wrong. It had taken my mates' rejection to open my eyes, but I finally accepted the truth.
"Luna! What happened?" Maria ran up to me, Ariel on her heels. "How can we help you?"
She went to hug me, but I held up my arms to keep her back, then began to toe off my sneakers so I could shift.
"Ask Alpha Cole," Matthew snapped as he and Tristan leapt down the porch stairs. "He just threw her out!"
"What?!" Ariel gasped.
"Something's wrong," Tristan said, "but we'll figure it out later. Luna is our priority now. Let's get her somewhere safe to calm down."
"Where's the parasite?" Maria asked in a panic. "Alpha Cole is guarding it until Gelo comes back."
"I don't know," Tristan told her, but kept his eyes on me.
I tuned them all out as I struggled to rein in the pain that radiated from me into the pack bonds. Several people - my other betas, Mom, Dad, Mama, Papa, Peri, Thoreau, even Gamma Reuben - nudged my pack link, their concern strong enough for me to feel even without opening it.
I was hurting everyone because I was stupid enough to think a runt was worthy to be a luna. That someone like me deserved mates and love and a family.
I can't keep hurting everyone.
From the house came a howl followed by the sounds of furniture being destroyed, then more wolves howling and snarling.
"We need to get her out of here!" Matthew barked. "It's not safe if the alphas are fighting!"
Tristan reached for me, but I dodged him. Giving up on my sneakers, I shifted, then fought my way out of my clothes. The four of them called out and tried to catch me, but my small brown wolf easily slipped away and streaked into the forest.
Then we ran.
