He looked at the four of us, his expression grave. “If you can do so safely, and if everyone’s willing, take her somewhere and keep her restrained so your omegas can help her through this without anyone getting hurt. If that’s not an option, she’ll just have to stay here under observation and tough it out. I’ll monitor her for dangerously high blood pressure readings, but that’s about all I can do.”

“We’ll help her,” I said firmly, choosing to look past the ‘your omegas’ language.

“We can take her to the nest in the guesthouse,” Flynn said. “Maybe that will help calm her down.”

“How’s Beckett doing?” Jax asked.

“His condition is precarious,” said the doctor. “As is the pup’s condition. I apologize if I seem dismissive of your alpha’s situation. But frankly, I can be of much more use to my other patient right now than I can be to this one. I’ll run the blood tests as quickly as I can, and if that yields anything useful I’ll let you know.”

“As long as it’s only a rut, she’ll live,” Flynn said. “Although she probably won’t enjoy it for the next little while.”

“If we’re moving her, let’s go.” Kam shot Alex a nervous look. “I just saw her hand twitch again.”

“I think we can risk one more sedative shot,” the doctor said. “It won’t last as long as the first, but it will give you time to get her to your nest.” He went to a small refrigerator in the corner of the room and retrieved a syringe and a vial, drawing up another dose of drugs and injecting Alex in the hip.

A cry of pain filtered through to us from the room next door.

The doctor straightened and sighed. “I must leave you now.”

“We’ve got her from here.” Flynn reached in his pocket and retrieved the key to the handcuffs.

“We’ll call you if there are any problems we can’t handle,” Jax added. “Do your best for Beckett’s pup, all right?”

The man nodded and left. I wondered if the others had truly realized that Beckett’s own life was in danger—not just his pup’s. I tamped the thought down before it could go further. We couldn’t help Beckett right now. Wecouldhelp Alex. I’d been where she was before—feeling my body betraying me and being unable to do anything about it. If Kam and I could help it, Alex wouldn’t have to suffer in that terrible purgatory for long.

THERE WAS AN omegain the room. The scent of sweet orchards and honey penetrated the overwhelming haze that had weighed down my mind and body, shrouding me in burning darkness. My clit throbbed, pulsing with painful need.

But we weren’t alone.Rivals. The heavy odor of other alphas sent my hindbrain galloping with the desire to fight, to kill, toclaim. Spicy musk and mossy cedar filled my nose. Familiar, but still my enemies. They would stand between me and the omega... or, maybe there had been two omegas? I thought there had been two before.

It didn’t matter. They would try to keep me from taking what should be mine, and I would have to kill or maim them to get what I wanted.

My body felt too heavy, like something was sitting on my chest. Like my arms and legs were pinned down. Alarm thrummed through my veins. If I couldn’t kill the alphas first, they’d kill me and keep the omegas for themselves. The burst of adrenaline woke my nerves and lent fresh strength to my muscles.
