She stared up at him, lightly touching his face. “Are you okay?”

He took a deep breath. “I’m fine.”

He withdrew from the hot depths of her pussy and rolled to his back, clutching his side. Ella sat up, worried.

“Let me see.”

He groaned. He didn’t feel sticky from blood, so that had to be a plus. “I’m fine.”

Even as he said it, he moved his hands so she could look at his side. “This time you shouldn’t have done that.”

He laughed. “Ah, fuck me, Ella. You make me lose control like no one else.”

She brushed her fingers along his stomach. “You were supposed to lie back and let me do the work.”

“That was before you surprised me by sucking my dick.”

She rolled her eyes and pulled the condom off. “Your staples are okay, but the stitches are puffy. You have some bruising. You really need to take it easy.”

He didn’t know if that was possible. “I’ll try. Are you hungry?”

She stood to get rid of the condom. “I’m actually tired.”

He lifted the pizza box and opened it, selecting a piece, then taking a bite. “Come on, baby. You can sleep next to me.”

She turned the lights out and pulled the covers back, sliding into the bed next to him. She didn’t seem too interested in sleeping, though he could see the fatigue on her face. He leaned over and brushed his finger along her cheek.

“Do you see us spending our lives together?” she asked. “Marriage, babies. A house with a yard and a dog. Do you see that kind of stuff in our lives at some point?”

He bit into his pizza. “Marriage, sure. Babies, no thank you. I’d love to buy a house with you and I’m not opposed to having a dog. No cats. I don’t like cats.”

“You don’t want kids?”

“No.” He glanced over at her. “Do you?”

She didn’t respond immediately. He lifted the pizza box and carried it to the kitchen before grabbing his water and climbing back into bed. He could see Ella as a mom. She’d probably want a houseful of kids, and even though he didn’t he could see himself conceding to the idea. With her, he saw himself wanting things he’d never dreamed of before.

“Not right now,” she finally replied. “I always considered adoption. I never really thought I’d ever find someone I wanted to marry, so I always pictured myself creating that kind of a life on my own.”

“Why didn’t you think you’d marry?” He settled in next to her, turning so that he faced her while favoring his side.

“I kept my virginity until I was twenty-nine. It wasn’t exactly on purpose either.”

“Do you want to get married?” He didn’t know why but the thought of her taking his name, becoming his officially to love and cherish for the rest of his life, sounded so fucking good to him.

“Are you proposing?”

He chuckled. “I can. You’ll have to wait on the ring, though. My doctor won’t let me get out of bed.”

She rolled toward him, finally smiling. He liked her body pressed up against him. He liked that she trusted him to protect her and shelter her. That she sought for him to. She was tough and independent, but he loved the little moments of vulnerability she showed that allowed him to swoop in and be the man she wanted him to be.

“I think marriage can wait. I need to finish my residency first.”

He was fine with that. Leaning over to kiss her, he said, “I love you, Ella.”

She smiled at him. “I love you too.”
