“See you later at home.” He winks at me before leaving Seer’s office.
Kai’s been working on a pale ale for fall and has been very hush-hush about the recipe. He’s the Brewmaster of the brewery, while Seer runs the establishment’s day-to-day operations. They make a great team, and I yet again find myself thinking how I would fit into their equation.
I know they’re lovers and have been for years, but they also have Phoebe. Where would that leave me? Do they even want to add another person into the bedroom after losing Sam?
“Hey, what’s going on in that head of yours, Baby?” Seer takes my hands in his and brings them to his lips.
He kisses my knuckles slowly as he watches me think.
“Just trying to figure out how to get my life back on track and where I belong in the world.” It’s as honest as I can be with all these raw emotions running through me.
“You start small. Other than where you’ll be living since we established that this morning, what is the next important thing?” Well, when you put it like that, it’s easy.
“School,” I don’t even hesitate, and it makes him smile at me.
“Come with me,” he tugs me out of the office and walks me to the bar.
Everyone notices how the Boss is holding my hand like a lost child, but I notice the smirks and my heart lurches. Not a child.
A lover.
I try to pull it away but he’s having none of it. To make matters worse, when I sit on the stool, he pulls out for me. He drops a kiss on my forehead like it’s a typical day for him, and he kisses all his employees. My cheeks burn when he walks away and taps Cowboy on his arm.
“Hey, Leah,” I turn to see one of the other waitresses coming up with an empty tray.
“Hi,” I can’t remember her name.
She just started a few weeks ago, and we haven’t worked together much. She’s looking over my shoulder at where Seer and Cowboy are still talking.
“How long have you been fucking him?” I cringe at her words.
“What?” I shake my head, and she rolls her eyes.
“I got called in early because you couldn’t crawl out of the boss’s bed for your shift. The least you could do is be honest.” I was so shocked by her words that I missed Kai walking in from the brewery.
She slams into him and gasps.
“You’re fired. Get the fuck out.” I’ve never heard him use that tone with anyone.
He’s livid.
“Are you fucking serious? Why?” Kai isn’t amused by her public display at all.
His eyes narrow at her as he points at me.
“Leah’s house burnt down last night, and you come in to cover, then accuse her of fucking the boss? No, we don’t need employees like you.” She throws the tray and her apron on the bar in a huff.
“Fuck you!” Storming out the side door, she turns around one more time and flips us all off.
“Are you ok?” Seer says, engulfing me in a hug.
“Baby, you’re shivering.” I can’t find my words but manage to nod into his chest.
I have to clear my throat a few times before I can get the words stuck there out.
“She just took me off guard. I’m fine. Are we short-handed now? I can go clock in.” Kai curses and bangs on the metal tray on the bar like a bong.
“Listen up! Leah isn’t working today for one reason only. Her place burned down last night. I’m sure you were all wondering why she arrived with Seer and me, but it’s none of your fucking business. All you need to know is that if we catch anyone disrespecting another employee, you’re fired, no questions asked. Got it?” Kai’s voice echoed for a moment before the other working person agreed with him.
