HANNAHF:Serious question
ADAMR:Shoot
HANNAHF:You mentioned you wash dishes
ADAMR:I do...
HANNAHF:Okay. So, when you’re putting silverware in the dishwasher, do you put your utensils in face up or down? And why.
ADAMR:Going straight for the make or break questions, huh?
HANNAHF:Hey, I don’t want to waste either of our time...
ADAMR:Well, I usually hand wash them. But if I’m going to use the dishwasher, sharp points down. Always.
HANNAHF:Always?
ADAMR:I could tell you the story, but I’d rather show you the scar sometime. Five stitches in my palm.
HANNAHF:Ouch
ADAMR:So, what do you think?
HANNAHF:About your scar?
ADAMR:About me showing you sometime. Maybe tomorrow night?
My heart flutters, and for a moment, it feels like he asked me out. Not Hannah. And while I wish I could say yes, I just promised I’d get to know more about these men before I send her out with them.
I crack my knuckles, excited to continue our conversation. Back when I dabbled in online dating, this was the part I loved. I’m a pro at the art of witty banter—especially when there’s ascreen between me and the man I’m talking to. It’s the in-person stuff that brings my insecurities raging to the forefront.
I’ve always been aware of the way society sees women like me, but the rejection hurts when it comes from a person you thought you had a connection with—a person you thought was in the bathroom until the waitress tells you he paid for his half of the bill and got his order to go before leaving.
At least I don’t have to worry that Adam will be disappointed with the woman he eventually gets to meet in person.
HANNAHF:LOL. Has that pickup line ever worked for you?
ADAMR:Hey, I told you I wasn’t good at opening lines
HANNAHF:Or closing ones, apparently
I send a smiley face so he knows I’m trying to be flirty, not rude.
HANNAHF:As much as I’d love to see your scar in person, I can’t tomorrow night
ADAMR:I understand
HANNAHF:Maybe next weekend?
That should be enough time to complete Hannah’s stalking requirements.
ADAMR:I’m out of town the next two weekends
I frown, more disappointed than I have a right to be; I have a good feeling about this guy. Although, on the bright side... if his and Hannah’s first date has to be delayed, that means more time for me to talk to him. To make sure he’s a good match for my sister.
HANNAHF:I guess that means you’ll have to make our first date worth the wait
ADAMR:Challenge accepted
