Chapter 1: Ty

Iwas sitting up at the kitchen table and doing the accounts for the house, trying to get the numbers to add up to a different amount by just putting them in a different order.

Obviously, that didn’t work.

I tried it again, one last time. Just in case.

It still didn’t work.

Sighing, I closed my laptop and pushed it away, rubbing my hands across my eyes. I’d been staring at that screen for far too long, and I knew better. I really did know better, because I designed websites for a living and I knew more horror stories of what happened to people’s eyes and backs when they sat too long at a computer than most people. It was why I had a strict two-hour limit for working, and then I had to take a five-minute break and do some stretches.

I checked the clock. Alder was due home any time, so I wouldn’t get any more work done anyway. I could always work if I wanted to, but why would I waste my Alder-time doing that? He worked long hours and I wanted to be with him when he got home.

Standing, my back cracked and I twisted side-to-side, trying to ease it. I’d sat for too long.

While I was waiting for my housemate to get home, I decided to get some stretches in. I wasn’t into doing anything adventurous but I figured if I could stave off any back problems and touch my toes, that was enough. A lot of alphas like me were built of muscle but had zero flexibility, so I was ahead of the curve in that. Reaching up as high as I could, I bent over, touching my toes and putting my hands on the floor. I took a moment to lean into the stretch and then straightened up, raising my hands again.

Then I turned to the side and nearly jumped out of my skin because Alder was standing in the doorway, watching me. His slender form was leaning against the doorframe and his fair hair was mussed as it often was by the end of the day. It always made me want to run my fingers through it.

He raised an eyebrow at my jump.

“I take it you didn’t hear me come in.”

“No, I didn’t.” I let my hands fall to my sides and smiled. “How was your day?”

“Meh, it was alright. I’m glad to be home, though. Finish your exercises.”

“I’m done,” I said.

“Nuh uh, no you’re not. Finish up while I put the coffee on.”

He moved across the kitchen and I rolled my eyes, starting to stretch my back and arms and legs. I had a yoga mat for proper stretching but I rarely used it. I didn’t get down and dirty enough to need it.

Alder moved around me as though it was perfectly normal and, I guess, for us, it was. I didn’t feel self-conscious in front of him at all and I just carried on with my stretches, bending over while I asked, “So who annoyed you today?”

It took a few seconds for Alder to reply but I waited and didn’t look round to see him. I knew he’d answer. He was probably just in the middle of something.

Sure enough, as I raised up, he said, “It wasn’t so much that someone annoyed me, it was just that they were being dense and it took aaaaages to get them to understand.”

I smirked. Alder taught Physics at Silford University and was a genius so I could sympathise with the students who needed some time to catch up.

“At least Waggoner’s alpha provided some entertainment,” he added.

“How so?”

“He’s moved himself in with Waggoner to take care of him while he recovers but he’s trying not to actually say that. I think he thinks if he doesn’t say it out loud then Waggoner won’t notice.”

“How is that funny?”

“Because I managed to make him really uncomfortable by hinting that I know why he goes to those classes. And he was useful, too. He told me which way the mugger went when they ran off.”

That made me stand up quicky. I made Alder jump because he turned his back on me quickly and began to fuss with the two mugs he’d laid out.

“Alder,” I said, a warning in my tone.

“What?”

“Look at me.” I actually had to wait for him to do it but I also knew Alder wouldn’t lie to my face. He couldn’t. “You aren’t going to do anything reckless with that information, are you?”
