I was sure by now my grip on his hands was probably leaving bruises, which was saying something for an omega of my size. I wasn’t exactly Mr. Strong, but Iwasdesperate.
“You’ll be fine.”
“You don’t know that.”
“You’ll have Ty. Of course you’ll be fine.”
My head was shaking side to side. No, no, no. “Ty doesn’t want you to leave any more than I do. You’re best friends.”
“We can still be friends if we don’t live together. There’s not a law on it.”
Ty’s voice was thick and husky. “It won’t be the same.”
Alder rolled his eyes. “Of course it won’t, it’ll be different. That doesn’t make it bad. We can still meet up. Just because we won’t see each other every day, doesn’t mean we’ll never see each other at all.”
I decided to ask. I had to know, because if I knew it was my fault, then I could fix it. “Is it because of me? Am I making you uncomfortable? Because I can stop, really I can. I won’t look at you like that any more, I promise. I won’t look at either of you. I don’t even mean to do it now. I just… please.”
“It’s nothing to do with yo— what do you mean you won’t look at me like that any more? How do you look at me?”
“Oh, um, nothing.” Ah, shit, I’d just gone and made it worse. I’d just been trying to establish whether he was uncomfortable with my crush. If he hadn’t even known about it, this was going to get awkward.
Beside me, Ty decided to chip in. Or betray me, whichever way you want to look at it. “He looks at you like you hung the bloody moon, Alder. Haven’t you noticed?”
I ducked my head, so embarrassed I couldn’t take it. I tried to pull my hands back but, this time, Alder tightened his grip and kept them there.
“I’ve noticed he looks atsomeonelike that. I don’t think it’s me, though.”
“Of course it’s you. He lights up every time you’re in the room.”
“Are you kidding right now? Ty, you’re the least aware person I’ve ever met. You havenoidea how he looks at you, do you?”
Needless to say, it was probably the most humiliating moment of my life, sitting there between them, listening to them discuss my totally obvious crushes. Clearly, I had been doing a great job of making them both incredibly uncomfortable with my lustful thoughts.
Ty scoffed. “He doesn’t look at me like anything. It’s you he’s looking at, Alder.”
“Really? Because I have seen him checking you out literally every day.”
If this was going to go on much longer, I might have a heart attack. I didn’t think it was healthy for my face to feel this hot. I might actually start melting my own skin off with how embarrassed I was.
Ty replied tartly, “I think I would have noticed that.”
“Bullshit.” I heard the incredulity in Alder’s voice and had to concede he was right. Ihadbeen checking Ty out, drooling over how utterly beautiful he was, and I’d been doing it since the first day I moved in. “You never notice.”
“I think I would notice if Ronnie wanted to fuck me.”
“You never noticedIwanted to fuck you.”
The words fell into the room like an avalanche, crashing down and settling between us. The whole room went completely still in the aftermath as we each stayed perfectly still, shocked and afraid to be the first to move. Then Alder yanked his hands out of my grip so suddenly that I didn’t get a chance to grab them back. He stood and was at the door in an instant.
“Forget I said that.”
“No, wait! What did you mean by it, Alder?”
Ty was lumbering to his feet, shock written all over his face, and a glimmer of something else, too. If I had to guess, I’d say it was hope. He was hopeful.
“I didn’t mean anything by it. I’m going up to my room. I want to be alone.”
He practically fled the room and both Ty and I stared after him, unmoving. I could still feel the heat of my face because no I hadn’t got over the complete mortification of the past few minutes. It’s just that wasn’t the most pressing issue at hand right then. Alder was.
