Sure enough, instead of jumping me like I always hoped he would, Alder pushed the bills into a pile and said, “Fine, we can get a new housemate. But we’re going to have to get one that’s not awful.”
“We will.”
Chapter 2: Ronnie
The house was a standard terraced house, two-storey with a cute little garden out the front. The garden wasn’t very big and I wondered if there was a proper one out the back. If there was, it would be the best house I’d looked at.
I tried not to get too excited about the possibility of having a garden and walked up the short path to the front door. There was a bell, which I pressed, and then I didn’t hear anything. I didn’t know whether it was too quiet for me to hear out here or whether it was broken, and was just wondering if I should knock – which would sound really pushy if itwasworking – when the door opened. Ok, so the bell worked.
I already had a smile in place, ready to greet whoever it was opening the door, because I wanted to make a good impression. That was a good thing, since my whole face froze in shock when I took in the huge alpha standing in the doorway.
He was big. That was my first impression. Big. He filled the doorway with his broad shoulders and thick body.
“Hi, are you Ronnie?” he asked. Because I’d been standing there without speaking.Great first impression, I congratulated myself.
“Uh, yes. I am. Ronnie, I mean. I am Ronnie. I’m here to see the house?”
Ok, this was getting worse. Could I have sounded any more moronic if I’d tried?
“Sure, come in. My name’s Ty.”
At least he wasn’t laughing at me.
He stood back and gestured me inside. I slipped in, squeezing against the wall so there was no chance of me touching him as I went past.
“Would you like me to show you around?”
“Um,” I said, and then my words dried up. I did want to see around the house. Obviously I did. Because otherwise how would I know what it was like?
On the other hand, I didn’t want to go upstairs alone with this stranger.
I hesitated long enough for it to get awkward and felt my cheeks heating.
The alpha took pity on me and suggested, “Shall I show you the lounge and kitchen first?”
I nodded and escaped into the lounge, which was large and so I didn’t feel trapped. Ty stood back and didn’t crowd me as I looked around.
There were clattering sounds in the kitchen and Ty gestured at the doorway. “Go through and take a look. Alder’s in there so you’ll get to meet him.”
I went through and saw a handsome omega putting something in the fridge. He closed the door and smiled at me.
“Hey, I take it you’re Ronnie?”
I nodded. I wasn’t doing very well at this at all, was I?
Alder didn’t seem to mind. He began asking me questions. “Where do you live now? So are you a student? What course are you taking?”
I stuttered out my answers and Alder’s eyes lit up when I told him I was a photography student.
From the doorway where he was loitering, Ty said, “Now you’ve done it. He’s going to want to know everything about that, now.”
“Huh?”
Alder pulled out a chair at the dining room table and gestured at it. “Sit, sit. So tell me about photography. How long have you been studying it?”
I sat, perching on the edge of my seat and tried to answer Alder’s questions. Initially, I’d assumed he was being polite but it soon became clear that he wasn’t. He was interested. Fascinated might be the best word to describe it.
I’d never had anyone take such an interest in me before. It felt… exhilarating. Alder’s eyes were intense and I could see the clear intelligence glinting in them. It made me want to impress him, so I began to tell him as much as I could and all the time he nodded and asked yet more questions.
