Alder’s eyes narrowed.
“You need to get out of your current house?”
My throat wasn’t working, so I just nodded.
“Are you living with an alpha?”
I nodded again.
“Do you feel unsafe?”
This time, I couldn’t even nod. I felt like I’d just been caught doing something shameful.
Alder’s voice became cold and hard. “Tell me why you feel unsafe.”
Something about the way he said it left no room for argument.
“My bedroom door doesn’t lock. I’ve come in to find him in my room before. Sometimes he’s in there when I get out of the shower. He’s always got an excuse, but… I don’t like it.”
There were a host of other reasons, too. Like the way he always scraped against me when he walked past, as though there wasn’t more than enough room for him to get past without touching me at all. Like the way his eyes followed me across the room. Like the way he touched himself when he was sitting on the sofa, fondling himself through his pants right in front of me, as though daring me to mention it.
“Anything else?”
“He eats my food out of the fridge because ‘it’s so delicious and that’s a compliment’ but it means I don’t have enough meals to last the week and—”
I stopped just short of saying ‘and so I go hungry’. I didn’t want Alder to know that. It sounded so pathetic. Especially to the sort of omega who had the confidence to throw an alpha out of the room because he wanted to talk to me alone.
“Right.”
There was steel in his voice and a shiver raced down my spine. I had only known him half an hour, but already I knew that Alder was unlike anyone I’d ever met before.
He walked to the kitchen door and shouted up the stairs.
“Ty! We’re done.”
I heard the stairs creak again and Ty appeared in the doorway. He smiled, which made my stomach flip. Must be nerves. Yes, that must be it.
He held out his arms. “Your wardrobe is this big.”
Alder sucked his teeth. “Great improvisation, big guy.”
Ty nodded, seemingly not noticing the sarcasm in that.
When Alder clapped his hands, I jumped.
“Right, let’s get going. We’ve got a lot of shit to move before it gets dark.”
Ty blinked at us. “You moving in now?”
I opened my mouth to answer – not even sure what I’d say, since I wasn’t sure that I was even invited – but Alder got there first.
“Yes, he is. He’s going to start paying rent next month but there’s no point us waiting two weeks for his lease to finish. We want him to move in. He wants to move in. Let’s get it done.”
Ty shrugged. “Ok, sounds good.”
That was it? They started pulling their shoes and coats on like it was no big deal, and I couldn’t believe Ty had just let Alder tell him what to do like that.
“Did you drive here?”
