CHAPTERFOUR

Meadow smiled as the entourage of River, his fiancée Indigo and his daughter Tierra arrived late morning with Meadow’s daughter Star and the Brookfield brothers’ grandmother, Amelia. It had been a big family trip out to go for the baby scan. Tierra had been desperate to see her future sibling on the scan and River and Indigo had decided to let her come so they could all find out the sex together. Star had also been really keen to see her new cousin too but Meadow knew that was more from a scientific inquisitive perspective than anything else. Amelia had been tasked with looking after the two girls in the waiting room while the sonographer checked everything was OK and then they were going to bring the girls in to have a look.

‘I’m going to have a brother,’ announced Tierra loudly as soon as she burst into the reception area.

Meadow adored Tierra, she was a five-year-old whirlwind of excited energy who gave her opinions freely.

‘We could see his willy,’ Star giggled.

‘Finally a boy,’ Bear teased.

‘Hey!’ Star said, feigning indignance. ‘Girls are best.’

Bear scooped her up to sit on his lap and kissed her head. ‘Yeah they are.’

Meadow couldn’t help smiling at them; it was clear they adored each other.

Indigo and River walked in with Amelia.

‘How was it?’ Meadow asked. ‘Was everything OK?’

‘All fine, a big strong boy,’ Indigo said, stroking her belly fondly.

‘He is big,’ River said, his voice holding a note of concern. ‘They said we might have to discuss a caesarean or an early induction but they won’t make any decisions on that until nearer the time.’

‘I’m sure they will do what’s best for Indigo and the baby,’ Bear said.

Indigo stroked River’s arm. ‘It will be OK, I promise.’

‘His heart was beating really fast,’ Star said.

‘And he waved at me,’ Tierra said.

‘I thought the sonographer was quite a hottie,’ Amelia said, fanning herself. ‘A right silver fox.’

River stared at her incredulously. ‘The first time you get to see your great-grandson, and that’s what you were looking at?’

‘What? A lady like me has to take the opportunity when it arises. What do you want me to say, that the baby was cute?’

‘Well that would be a start?’ River said.

‘I thought he was cute,’ Tierra said, protectively.

‘We couldn’t really see his face though,’ Indigo said, ‘just an outline on the screen.’

‘I’m sure he will be cute,’ Amelia said. ‘He has the Brookfield genes.’

‘I thought it was really interesting,’ Star said.

‘She asked a ton of questions,’ Indigo said. ‘The sonographer was wonderful, he explained everything to her.’

‘Did you get any photos?’ Bear asked.

‘The printer was broken but they are going to email over a load of pictures so we can print them off ourselves,’ River said.

‘I said we should name him Olaf,’ Tierra said.

‘We’re going to discuss lots of different options for names,’ Indigo said, diplomatically.
