Maybe Jax didn’t just want me for a quick lay. Perhaps he actually wanted me for more. Well, a whole day on the back of his bike… I would soon find out.

“So, about last night...” I started.

“Don’t worry about it.” Jax cut me off, handing me a helmet. “I put you on the spot.”

“Yeah, but I acted like a child. Who runs away?”

Jax didn’t respond. Instead, he got on his bike, straddling it and waiting for me. Placing a hand on his shoulder, I threw my leg over the bike and gripped him from behind, wrapping my arms around his waist, the leather of his patch cold on my arms.

“Amber?” Jax said as he cocked his head slightly over his shoulder. “I broke up with El.”

With that, he started the bike up, it roaring loudly, without giving me a chance to respond. He broke up with El, which meant he… didn’t care for her?

What does that say about me? Why did I get this feeling that the reason we were going out today was because he wanted to talk to me?

My stomach flipped over. I was falling hard for a bikie.

Chapter 23

“People keep crossing the road,” I hissed up at Jax, as we walked hand in hand down the footpath.

He was standing tall, his patch on display for everyone to see. His sunglasses blocked his eyes from view, but I think everyone near us knew that his eyes were deadly. I attempted to pull my hand from his grip again, as I saw yet another family cross the street to get away from us.

“Stop doing that,” Jax snapped down at me, and purposely pulled me closer to his side “I’ll think you’re ashamed to be with me.”

Rolling my eyes, I attempted to not be pissed off by his confidence. “When you said let’s go for a ride, I thought we would be going for a ride. Not a ride into town,” I stated.

“Don’t worry Amber, you can cling to me for the whole afternoon.” He smirked sideways down at me, “I’ve just got to take care of something first.”

We came to a stop out the front of a pub; men were leaning over the rail, bottles of beer and cigarettes in their hands. These guys didn’t even care it was barely midday; actually it looked like they had been at it for a while.

“You can wait here or come in,” Jax said as he eyed the few guys who were glaring drunkenly at us.

“I’m not waiting out here,” I scoffed, and holding his hand, I walked into the pub, although he was quick to step in front of me.

Guys and protection, I thought to myself. God forbid a woman walked in front of them. I shot daggers into the back of his head as he guided us to the bar.

“Stay here,” he said, and gently pushed me onto a stool. “I’ll be back.”

“So I either get to be ditched outside of the dirty pub, or inside it,” I scoffed. “Great.”

Jax put his sunnies to the top of his head and I saw his slight eye roll at me. “I won’t be long.” He glanced behind me. “Stay here. Got it?”

“Yep, crystal clear,” I muttered dryly, and spun around on the seat to face the bar front on. I shivered as I felt his hand brush across my lower back as he walked from behind me, leaving me there.

“Want anything?” an old bartender huffed at me, dragging a dirty towel around the edge of a beer mug.

“I’ll pass.” I stated. I purposely turned back around and leaned on the bar behind me. If I didn’t face him, maybe I wouldn’t have to chat with him.

This place smelled like a bad mix of alcohol, cigarettes and stale food.I glanced at the closed door; Jax must have gone in. How long was he going to be?

I sighed. I wanted to ask why he and El had broken up but it wasn’t like I could just come out with that, was it? I bit my bottom lip. He broke up with her… that was a good thing right?

“Get your fucking eyes off her chest!” Jax roared. I snapped my head at him, as he glared murderously across the room at a table full of men. “Fix your top,” he snapped in my direction, before slamming the door behind him.

I didn’t know those guys were even staring at me! I glanced at them briefly, each of them now staring into their beers.
