“What? I’m not allowed to ask my mate how her date with another man was?” Bitterness coated his words.
“Sure. But first you tell me, how did you sleep next to your wife last night?” I fired back. How dare he make me feel like I was cheating on him! He was the one with a wife.
I felt like slamming my fist into the side of his face. Wow, that was violent, Chloe.
“Just fine,” Xavier snapped at me. “So, your date?”
“Just fine.” I crossed my arms. “Can I go now? I said I would have lunch with Dan.”
“Oh, how could I forget your other boy toy,” Xavier scoffed. “The one you sleep with.”
“I wouldn’t go there, if I were you.”
“You’re my MATE! I can say what I WANT!” Xavier hissed and I saw the vein on his neck bulge. I had to ignore how those words made me feel, and the jealousy.
“Correction.” I removed any emotion from my face and kept my expression blank. “I am your side-lined mate.”
Xavier’s anger dropped. “That’s what you think you are to me?”
His office door swung open. And of all people. I couldn’t believe it.
“Oh, Sorry, Mr. Clark. My bad,” Scott quickly apologized. “The buses are here early.”
Xavier let out a deep breath. By the sound of it, he was attempting to calm himself.
“Thanks for informing me, Scott. Can you start rounding up the teams early then?” Xavier spoke to Scott. I quickly turned on my heel.
“I’ll help,” I said, walking towards the door.
“I thought you were going with Dan.” Scott smirked at me.
“I am. But I thought I could help you.” I said lightly. “Thanks for the chat, Mr. Clark. It really helped.”
I didn’t turn to see his expression and I didn’t give a second thought to whatever he was going to say before Scott barged in. Because at the end of the day, he still wants his wife over me.

“So a human, eh?” Dan smiled at me as we drove behind the school bus on the highway.
“Yeah, it was just a date,” I said lightly, while looking at him sideways. “How did you find out?”
“Your mom was going on about in the pack house. It got back to me.” Dan smirked. “So, is he toilet trained?”
“Dan,” I said firmly. “Don’t start on me.”
“I’m not. It’s just…aw come on.” Dan’s smile got slightly larger. “It’s funny.”
“I see nothing funny about it.”
Dan chuckled before signaling to go around the bus, which was moving painfully slowly. “I don’t get it though. Why would you want a human when you have me?”
“Because a human can’t mate. You, on the other hand, have a beautiful mate out there waiting for you.” I attempted to suppress the sadness I felt about Dan finding someone else.
“Maybe I don’t have a mate,” Dan said lightly. “Maybe your mate was meant to deny you. Maybe you and I are meant to be together and that’s the plan all along.”
“Or maybe you just haven’t met her yet, and my mate was meant to deny me because fate and karma have it in for me.”
“Why did your mate deny you?” Dan shot me a sideways glance. “If you don’t mind me asking.”
