CHAPTER 7

LIV

My body was aching, throbbing even, as I rolled over in Maiden’s bed. I don’t know what got into him last night, but when he came storming into the lounge, he was so angry. I couldn’t stop myself from calming him down with my aura control. And once I did, he convinced me to go back to his bedroom.

Considering I was aching and sore from the workout, I agreed. Last thing I remembered was falling asleep in his arms. He was so doped out on the relaxation I had casted over him, he fell asleep easily and I hadn’t been far behind him.

Sitting up and rubbing my eyes, I saw him standing by the window, casting a deadly look down at whoever was in the lot.

“You okay?” I asked, in which he snapped around, surprised by my voice. I frowned. Had he forgotten I was here?

I was asleep in his bed, with only underwear on. And he forgot about me? That was a great confidence boost.

“I need to tell you something.” Maiden moved from side to side uneasy and then looked me in the eye. “I found my mate.”

My expression dropped. Because of the drugs, my wolf was basically numbed. I could run straight into my mate and I wouldn’t be any the wiser.

He frowned at my expression. “It’s not you,” he answered my bubbling question.Right. Wasn’t me.I nodded my head.

“Okay,” I breathed out, really anxious now.

“It’s Emmie, she is a girl—”

“From the silent charter,” I finished his sentence. I knew Emmie all too well. People would confuse us ever since she dyed her hair. “Look, Maiden, nothing happened between us last night if that is what you’re concerned about.” I got straight to the point.

What is worse than sharing a bed with a guy, only to get told the next day—that morning even—that you aren’t his mate? What was worse, was that nothing happened between him and I, so why he was so worked up, pulling the ‘I’ve mated’ card to get me out of his bed.

“I’ll be okay,” I said easily. He didn’t want me here, then so be it. But he was quick to grab my wrist.

“I’m telling ya, so you don’t pin ya jobs on something that won’t happen. I can’t love ya.”

“It’s fine, Maiden—”

“But I still want to fuck ya.”

And those words sent me speechless. “Excuse me?” I spoke out of shock. Had he just said that!

“I just wanted you to know all the cards on the table before we got into anything. Emmie and I have bonded. Nothing keeping me back from you know . . ..” He was lost for words. Who was he trying to convince that hadn’t mated? Me or him?

I smiled. “How about we just have breakfast?” And then my phone vibrated on the table, and I glanced at it.

It was a message from Den, saying he had enjoyed the other night and wanted a repeat of it.

My stomach dropped and twisted tightly.

My eyes went from the phone to Maiden. I couldn’t stop the building tears. Trying to blind them back, they fell anyway.

“I have to go.” I grabbed my phone and jeans, threading them on in a rush and picking up my top. I needed to get out of here.

I couldn’t have Maiden seeing the fear in my eyes. He was a very intuitive person, and I knew I couldn’t fool him completely.

“Liv, wait—”

But I was already opening the door, walking out into the hall while trying to put my top on. Just as I turned the corner, Maiden was yelling—well, more like ordering—for me to come back.

I walked into a hard chest, surely my luck wasn’t that bad. Then I felt it, a spark—and my expression melted away.
