“What do you eat?” He might be drying me but his mind was still on my weight.
“Food.”
He looked me sharply in the eyes. “A full day, tell me what you eat.” He was being firm on it. He was always serious.
He really wasn’t going to drop it. How do I tell him that since we separated I’ve doubted every single thing about myself? I lost my confidence when it came to my body.
“Jax, can we just, not talk about it?” My emotions that I normally felt about this subject came through my voice.
He had finished drying my legs, and it only left one part of my body he hadn’t dried. His hand went to my stomach, and he had no idea how nervous I was.
When I was young, I didn’t care what people thought of my body. Even when I got marked by with that scar, I still wore a bikini in front of my brothers and Jax.
His hand moved up my body, “How long has it been a problem?” His words were gentle and soft.
I dragged my eyes off the tiled floor and looked at him but his eyes were on my body. I think he was approaching the subject lightly, knowing that I would bolt if he asked me the direct question, which was how long have you been starving yourself.
“A while.” I felt like a disappointment and I didn’t want him knowing how much of a failure I was.
He nodded and his hand started to run over my shoulders. “Did it start when you had to stop eating because you didn’t have money?”
I was taken back by that for a second. Right Tae had shared that with him. I wouldn’t have mentioned that to Jax. Ever.
“Um, Jack was fine.” I felt like he needed to know that. “Jack eats. Trust me, he doesn’t stop. Jack has never gone without food.” My words were coming out rushed. I was panicking. Fuck. I didn’t want Jax to think I starved his son. “I swear, Jax, Jack hasn’t missed a meal. Like ever. Jack eats. All the time. Always has.”
“Amber, stop.” Jax’s voice was calming. “Calm down.”
“No, you don’t understand. I don’t want you thinking that.”
“Amber. Stop. Take a breath.” His hands were close to my breasts. “I didn’t ask if Jack ate. I asked if that was when your problem started? Did your problem with food start because you didn’t have money?”
My head dropped. And I wasn’t surprised when he lifted my chin.
“Sweetheart. Come on, don’t shut down on me.” He dropped the towel, and his hands went to my hips. And as if to prove his point, he lifted me up. “Legs around me, sweetheart.”
“I’m naked and you’re dressed. It isn’t fair.” I did as he asked and wrapped my legs around him. “You know I should be questioning you about how big you’ve gotten.” I put him in the spotlight.
A grin spread across his face. “You calling me fat?”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m just saying you need to lay off the weights.”
He laughed and I couldn’t admit just how much I had missed hearing that. Jax was usually always serious; he only laughing when he was in a calm and playful mood.
“I’m serious, Jax, I can’t even wrap my hand around your arm.” I tried doing it, and proved my point. “You know you have gotten bigger than Cole, and we both know he has an unhealthy relationship with weights.”
We came to a stop in my closet. And I expected him to lower me down, so you know, I could get dressed. But the fact I was naked didn’t seem like a problem for him, as he kissed my shoulder, and then slowly across it.
“Jax, you do realize you need to let me get dressed, right?” I arched my neck as his kisses moved up my skin. God, my body just melted at his touch. It wasn’t healthy.
His mouth went to my ear. “What you did for my last night, I won’t forget that, sweetheart.”
I pulled back to smile at him. “Are you talking about my special talent that I didn’t know existed?”
He shook his head. “Don’t you dare play dumb with me. We both know the power you have over me.”
I thought that was a bit cute, him thinking I had some sort of power over him. Truth was, I didn’t. But thinking I could have, well, it made my heartbeat increase and gave me a confidence boost.
“Um, Jax. Jack’s going to be here soon, and I need to be dressed.” I slowly pushed away from him. And he pulled me back.
