“Please, I wish. I can’t even pay a mortgage payment. Which is ridiculous, right? I earn double her wage.” Will started venting his annoyance about me not letting him help me out financially.

“I earn over six figures. I don’t need your money.” I gave him the line I always gave him, and he rolled his eyes.

“Wait, Amber works? Like a nine-to-five job?” Cole sounded delighted, like me suffering in a job, had made his night. He and I had always shared the same view on people who worked a straight job.

“Nine-to-three actually,” I corrected Cole.

“Yeah, she pushes more paper then me.” Will gave me a smug look.

I whacked Will in the stomach. “You make it sound like that’s all I do!”

“Babe, it is all you do.”

“I’d like to see you tackle the companies’ monthly finances,” I snipped at him.

“I’d like to tackle your monthly finances.”

“We aren’t having this argument.”

“So, you admit it’s an argument!”

I groaned and pointed at my brothers. “This is your fault. You guys brought up marriage.” Which brought up Will’s favorite topic—my bills. I don’t know how many bills I had caught him trying to pay on my behalf on his phone.

Which only backfired, because I would just transfer whatever he paid back into his account.

“You look married.” Tyler shrugged at his mistake. “You live together, right?”

“You would think that, wouldn’t you?” Will said, and I groaned. Will’s other favorite subject. “Your sister has trust issues.”

They all laughed, nodding their heads.

“They know the reasons behind why I have that trust issue,” I muttered.

Will looked me in the eye. “Yeah, and he has a name. Jax.”

I nodded. My least favorite subject. And my head snapped at Cole, who scoffed.

“What?” I said.

Cole waved a hand at Will. “You told him the truth. About Jax.” Cole was saying that like I would lie about Jax. Didn’t they realize by now, I didn’t lie about my past? Not about Jax and not about them.

“Will knows everything.” I glanced at him “Even things he shouldn’t. Like, apparently, he knew my criminal record before he took me on the first the date.” I cocked a look at the boys. “Does that say anything to you guys?”

“Cop,” they said.

“That’s what I thought last night!” I nodded and poked Will. “And stalker.”

“Admit it. You are glad I did.”

I grinned. He was right, I was glad he knew me so well. It meant no secrets. Apart from the white lies he told me to keep me from worrying.

There was a horn out front. I groaned. “I hate this.”

“Come on, Amber I’ll be back before Jack’s birthday.”

“You told him that, too.” I gave Will a pointed look. “You shouldn’t have promised him that.”

His hands went to my face, cupping my face gently. Like I was fragile. “I’m telling you I’ll have my part finished by then.”
