“Dad?”
My eyes were still locked on Amber’s doctor’s report. Thinking about a little girl just like Amber “Mm?”
“Dad?” Jack tapped out my arm, causing my eyes to go off Amber’s report and on to him.
“Sorry, Jack. What is it?” I put my full attention on Jack, trying to put how I felt about Amber’s pregnancy aside and the possibility of a daughter. Fuck. I was lucky to have Jack, he was a gift.
“Mom has another name.” Jack frowned just slightly. “It’s John something.”
“Johnston?” Nah, surely not…
Jack nodded. “Yep, can we try that one?” He spun back around, his eyes on the screen.
Amber used my last name? Nah. No way. Maybe she had just used the last name John. I started to type it in and then stopped after typing John, my fingers hovering over the last letters.
Had she really been using my last name?
I typed the rest of the letters in, seeing Amber Johnston on the screen. I always wanted her to have my last name. I hit search.
I always wanted to marry her, more so, when she got back from England. I wanted to tie her down. Make sure the whole world knew who she was. She was already known for being a Shield and being linked to bikers. But I wanted her to have my last name, so every biker knew. The king had a wife, and Amber’s name would be enough to stop anyone from hurting her. It also meant she was legally tied to me.
I watched the screen and my eyes were stunned when the information wasn’t blank. All her other fake names, had no details, no information, just a fake name and address. Maybe the odd speeding fine but that was it.
This was the name she used.
I went to medical history; the first data entry was lodging Jack’s birth. “You found it, Jack. This is the name she uses.” I started scrolling through the entries. Years’ worth.
“Does it say if she is sick?”
I finally scrolled to the bottom, looking at the last few entries. “Okay, looks like your mom went to the doctor for nausea at the start of the month.” I clicked out of that entry into the next one. “And then again a week later for…” I read the details and what she was prescribed. Valium. “Has your mom been a bit cranky, Jack?” I asked him, to see if he had noticed anything with Amber.
She hadn’t told me she was on valium.
“Only when Grandpa is here.”
“Has he been here this month?”
Jack nodded.
I sighed. So, Amber took Valium to deal with her dad. She never handled her dad well. I guess their relationship hadn’t improved over the years.
I went back and there was only one other entry. “Okay, Jack, so far all your mom has had is nausea. Now she has been to the doctor one other time, last week. You ready to see what for?”
Jack eyes dropped to his lap. “Was that when she got told she was sick?”
“Let’s see.” I was hoping right now Amber wasn’t keeping a secret from me. I didn’t open it. What if Tae knew something I didn’t? Jack was nervously playing with his hands. Amber had a habit of doing that when she was nervous.
Suddenly, I was nervous. What if she was sick? And she wanted to make sure he had one of his parents?
What if her depression and eating disorder weren’t the main problem. But something else was?
“Dad, what does it say?”
Jack was waiting and I found myself holding tighter onto him as I highlighted and clicked it.
“All right, buddy, let’s see who was lying. Your mom or Uncle Tae.”
I was never a quick reader but my eyes were running over the doctor’s report like I was a fucking speed reader.
