She finally turned to look at me. “You don’t live here.”
Well, she had me there. “I don’t but my sister does.”
Her eyes hovered over my vest for a minute, which had me nervous. People didn’t trust bikers. It was a common fact. So, I was expecting her to bolt.
“You must be one of Amber’s brothers,” she finally said, her expression softening. “She always said you would track her down.”
“You know Amber?”
“My boss and best friend.” She sighed, looking back at the house “And she’s going to kill me.”
I didn’t even realize I was doing it, until my fingers were wiping away her tears from her cheek. She didn’t pull away from my touch. Instead, she just looked me in the eye. I didn’t see the panic or fear in her eyes that most women had when they looked at me.
“Come inside.” I glanced down at the dress she was wearing, which was stuck to her from the rain. My eyes lingered for longer than they should have on her breasts.
She straightened her shoulders. “Your sister might kill me.”
I smiled because the old Amber had the ability to end a life but I didn’t think the new Amber had it in her.
“If I say I make sure she won’t, will it get you to come inside?” Out of the fucking rain.
She shivered. “You would protect me from your sister?” The corner of her lips twitched up.
I shrugged. “I don’t want my sister on murder charges.”
“What’s your name?”
“Troy.”
“Chelsea.” She pushed her blond hair that was stuck to the side of her face out of the way.
“Well, Chelsea, you coming inside?”
She sighed and nodded. “I might take you up on that protection though.”
I found myself smiling again.
We walked back toward the house, and I found myself putting a hand on her back, guiding her up the porch steps. She didn’t even flinch from my touch. Maybe she was so cold she didn’t feel it.
She paused at the front door. Was I going to have to push her in?
Just when I thought I was going to have to, she twisted the front doorknob and walked in. Well, stumbled in. I don’t know how she was even capable of walking in heels like those.
“You okay?” I caught her.
“You would think after walking for over two hours in these heels I’d be used to the height, right?” She seemed annoyed with herself and I slowly let go of her, once she was steady again.
Wait, did she just say she had walked for over two hours? In this weather?
“Okay, let’s get this over with.” Chelsea winced from pain taking her heels off. “Still ready to protect me from your sister?”
For some reason, I had a feeling I would protect this woman from anyone. Why did I feel that? I didn’t do feelings toward women. Nor did I want to protect one. Unless it was Amber.
I nodded. But she didn’t move.
I slowly started to push her toward the living room. She was walking forward only because I was forcing her.
I could hear Amber and the boys laughing.
