His hand slowed on my shoulder. His other hand going to my cheek turning my head around to look back at him. His lips were soft, and surprised me at first. Before I could even kiss him back, his lips were gone.
“I’m sorry.” His hand was still on my cheek, his thumb running over my bottom lip. “I’m so fucking sorry.” He was looking at me like he had broken me.
What was he saying sorry for? I felt like he wasn’t just apologizing for my shoulder. Which wasn’t even his fault.
I turned around, now on my knees in front of him. Taking his hand off my cheek, I kissed the back of his hand. “I’m pretty sure it wasn’t your train set I tripped over.” I smiled softly at him.
He opened his mouth and I had a strong feeling what he would say. So, I moved quickly, silencing him with my lips. I didn’t need him telling me he was sorry.
I knew he was sorry. And I hoped he knew how sorry I was.
Before he could speak, we both heard the garage door going up.
I quickly reached for my top. But before I could thread it on, Jax took it off me. I frowned for a second. Had he not heard the garage door? Then he was threading my arms through the top, and lifting it over my head. Making sure I didn’t have to place my arms above my head.
I couldn’t stop the smile from covering my face, as he pulled the t-shirt down on me. God, he could be sweet when he wanted to be. How had I forgotten that? All those small sweet things he used to do came back to mind.
He stood up and put a hand down for me. I took his hand and just got on my feet when I heard the door open. I couldn’t stop staring at him. And then I knew I shouldn’t but I quickly took the step toward him, closing the gap, going up on my toes.
“Fucking cops!” Cole burst into living area.
And I sighed. Guess I didn’t get that kiss in before my brothers showed. I didn’t hide my disappointment. Then Jax’s lips were on mine. He didn’t seem to care that my brothers were walking in, as if he knew how much I needed to feel his lips.
He pulled back. “We can pick this up later.”
Right, time to play dumb. “You guys were a while.” I faked concern and walked away from Jax and headed for Cole, who was dropping pizza boxes on the kitchen island.
Troy scoffed, walking in. “Don’t even pretend like you don’t know where we have been.”
I faked a frowned. “I thought maybe you guys got lost? What happened anyway?” I acted concerned and interested.
“What happened!” Cole snapped, clearly frustrated with how he had spent the last few hours. “The fucking cops had a road block set up!”
“Oh, but Tyler hadn’t been drinking, right?” I wanted to say I was the world’s best actress. Seriously, I deserved an award right now. “Had he?” My voice went firmer. Where was Tyler?
“Nah, he was fucking sober. As if any of us would let him drive, if he hadn’t been, with Jack in the car.” Cole looked at me like was I was stupid and then pointed a finger at me. “It was your fucking car!”
I suppressed my smile. And then pretended like it had just occurred to me. “The new registration, hadn’t it cleared?” I even faked a frown. “Sorry, guys.”
“The police went over us. Having a field day with our records!” Cole snapped.
I snuck at glance at Troy. His eyes were running over the room. What he was looking for? Oh, wait. Chelsea. He realized she wasn’t here and moved around Cole, starting to open pizza boxes.
“Wouldn’t they be cold?” I said, this time it was a real frown on my face.
Cole gave me a dry look. “The first ones went cold. This would be our second trip.”
“Where’s Jack?” It suddenly hit me quickly. “Where is he?” My body went to panic mode. I thought he would be safe with them. “The cops didn’t take him off you guys, did they?” Fuck. I should have thought of that! Why didn’t that even occur to me, that could happen!
“Amber, calm down. Adam’s putting him to bed. He fell asleep,” Troy said before I went into kill mode.
“Did he eat before he fell asleep?” That now occurred to me. I really didn’t put Jack first tonight. God, I was a bad parent. Suddenly, I didn’t need the boys to be pissed off with me. I was pissed off with me.
“Oh, yeah, he ate.” Cole scoffed and shook his head. “And then some brainless moron gave him coke!” Cole’s eyes went to Tyler.
“Oh, how I was meant to know what was going to happen!” Tyler walked in, carrying more pizza boxes. “Seriously, I didn’t know he was going to turn into a gremlin!”
I groaned. I knew very well what type of mood Jack goes into when having soda. “Let me guess, he gave you guys hell?”
