“Fine. I’ll cancel the play date.” I gave in and went back to walking up the hallway, I turned just before I walked out into the living room. “I’ll have my phone on me, if you get in over your head just call, okay?”

He rolled his eyes and turned me around, pushing me out of the hallway.

I brushed his hand off my back as soon as me entered the living room. I didn’t want Jack to think Jax and I were together. Because I wasn’t even sure what Jax and I were.

I smelled the food just as I existed the hallway into the open living. Chelsea was at the kitchen island, her eyes on her laptop.

“Mom, Chilly made me pancakes!” Jack spotted me, and my eyes went to Jack.

“Did you get Chelsea out of bed?” I asked Jack, knowing my son had a habit of going to Chelsea when she stayed here. He loved having sleepovers with her.

“No, he didn’t,” Chelsea answered for him and then glanced at, giving me a small smile. “Morning, and now that you are up, I have to leave.”

I crossed my arms. “Have you slept?”

“Showered and fresh clothes, does that count?” Chelsea closed her laptop and then turned her attention on to me. “Don’t even start lecturing me.”

“I’m totally forcing you to take the rest of the day off when I’m back.” I looked at her smugly. She hated having leave. “Make you spend that bonus I’m giving you.”

Something flashed across Chelsea’s face but she hid it from me before I could pick up on it was exactly.

“Chelsea, is everything all right?” I walked toward her. My best friend didn’t hide shit from me. Unless it had to do with Mason.

“Yeah, everything is fine.” She flashed me a smile while packing up her work. “Jack and I are planning on the movies tonight; is that okay?”

I knew my friend too well. Everything was not fine. And I wasn’t letting it slip. I was going to call her out on it, when she handed me an iPad.

“I’ve answered all your emails but that one. I thought it was spam or something but it says it’s from one of your locked contacts. Anyway, assumed you would want to see it.” She redirected my attention. “It’s just numbers, maybe it is spam? I don’t know.”

I looked down at the email. Two set of numbers, and then a list of numbers under it.

“Jax?” Chelsea spoke directly to Jax, causing my eyes to flash up. I knew she never felt confident to have a conversation with a guy, let alone Jax.

Jax’s eyes were on Chelsea, having his attention. She was picking up her work. “Amber hurt her shoulder. Make sure she takes pain killers.”

“Right, I’ll go get some.” Jax glanced at me, as if him saying that meant I would let him.

“Already done. I got her scripts filled.” Chelsea shot me a disapproving look. “I knew she wouldn’t.”

I crossed my arms. She knew me too well. Well, that doesn’t mean I’m taking them. Then I saw Jax’s expression.

“I’ll make sure she has them. Thanks, Chelsea.” Jax’s eyes went to me. And I knew better than to pick an argument over this with him. Looks like I was having painkillers.

Chelsea’s phone started to ring. “Okay I’ve got to go.” She started to walk backward. Her eyes still on me, pointing her ringing phone at me. “Don’t you dare pick up one of the office calls today.”

“Why, what’s happening today?” I tried to remember my schedule.

“Rebecca’s annual review.” Chelsea’s eyes went to Jax. “Do not let Amber pick up or make a call today.” Just as she said that, she walked straight back into Troy. Nearly dropping everything she was holding.

And those deadly heels she liked to wear nearly caused her to lose her balance completely. Lucky for her, Troy grabbed her, steadying her. I don’t think Chelsea realized just which one of my brothers she had walked back into, until she turned.

“Sorry, Troy,” she said quickly. “Um and thanks.” Then she brushed past him, heading up the hall. I noticed how Troy’s eyes followed her. Wasn’t until the front door closed, that he looked back at us.

I couldn’t stop the smile from forming on my face.

“Can we talk, Amber?” Troy didn’t even react to my smile. Chelsea hadn’t gone into a complete meltdown about walking into him, which meant she wasn’t as scared of him. What had my big brother done, to get Chelsea not terrified at touching him?

“Sure.” I glanced back down at the iPad in my hand. Why were those numbers familiar? “Guessing you want to speak privately?” I assumed he was going to tell me off or something. My big brother always liked to tell me off and remind me to stay out of his love life.
