“Why do I have a feeling this isn’t about reopening your bank accounts?” She crossed her arms, her eyes still locked with mine. “Start telling me what’s wrong.”
“Nothing’s wrong.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
I sighed. “I’m just nervous.”
“You don’t do nervous.”
Yeah, and I didn’t share my empire with anyone either. But I was about to make her a lifetime offer and this was the second time someone had approached her about leading an empire. She turned Tae down, so what would stop her from turning me down?
Okay. I was going to word this the best I could. Here goes nothing.
Chapter 25
Amber
“Amber can we have that conversation now?” Jax’s voice waved with nerves and I looked up.
“What’s wrong with you?” I asked.
He quickly tried to compose his face and failed. “I just need to talk to you. You know have your full attention.”
I slowly nodded my head. “Okay, you’ve got it.” I put the iPad to the side. Only one thought was running through my head. He had practiced a speech to give to me, and I couldn’t put him off telling me he was leaving any longer.
I know Jax. I know when he has a speech in him. He remained silent. Causing me to sign.
“Jax, what’s wrong?”
He’s staring at me blankly as if his mind was running so fast, he couldn’t keep up.
“Why do I have a feeling this isn’t about reopening your bank accounts?” I crossed my arms, my eyes still on him. “Start telling me what’s wrong.”
“Nothings wrong.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
He sighed. “I’m just nervous.”
“You don’t do nervous.”
I stared at him for a few moments longer. I had no idea what was going through his mind exactly but I know him. I know when he gets close, it is his automatic reaction to pull back. I knew he was moments away from telling me he was done with us, Jack and I. Did it scare me? It terrified me. But I couldn’t force him to stay where he didn’t want to. My eyes fell to my lap, as I processed the fact, that he had once again decided to leave.
“Jax, look if you are leaving. . .” I sighed. “I get it.” I dragged my eyes back to his. “You told me when you were eighteen you didn’t do commitments. I hadn’t planned on telling you about Jack, expecting you to. . .”
“Stop.” Jax snarled over me, and his furious dark eyes locked with mine. “I get it. My past is always going to haunt me. Ain’t no fucking lie that I always pushed you away. But I learnt my lesson and I’m telling you Amber, if you just give me a chance to show you I can be the man you need.”
I frowned. “Jax I already said I was giving you a shot.”
He shook his head. “Nah I don’t want some half ass dating. I want you all in.”
“I am all in.” My arms tightened, and he gave me a dry expression.
“You aren’t all in. If you were, you’d tell me what has been going on with you the last couple of days.”
Fuck. I had hoped he hadn’t noticed.
“You’ve been busy,” I pointed out. “And I’m fine.”
