I wondered how old her son was? Just when I thought I would have to get closer to get a look of him, the crowd parted slightly and the kids leaned back, giving me my first real view of him. Black hair. Just like his mother. He blew out his candles and looked up, his eyes locking with mine for a second. But that was all I needed.
My eyes.I had just stared into my eyes.
I was frozen on the spot, not caring that any minute the crowd’s attention would be off her son.
My brain started to slowly click. Amber’s final words to me all those years ago had been, “I won’t ever let you hurt me or him.” At the time, I thought I had heard her wrong.
Now, I just couldn’t believe it.
The crowd blocked my view of him again. I had to see him. I had to look into those eyes again. And if it confirmed what I thought I saw… well, Amber and I sure as fuck had something to talk about.
I moved closer, and two men stepped in my way. Arms crossed. I had been spotted but not by Amber.
Troy gripped my arm. “For your own fucking sake, don’t make a scene,” he hissed in my ear and dragged me away.
I was still in shock so I didn’t fight him or Cole as they pushed me outside.
“What the fuck was that!” I yelled at them as soon as we were outside.
“That was a birthday party,” Cole snapped at me. “One you weren’t invited to.”
I pointed at the building. “Those were my eyes!” I looked at them, seeing if they would deny it. They fucking didn’t, which had me going around them, but Troy grabbed me and throw me back.
“She was going to tell you.” Troy stood in my way.
“Well, she can fucking tell me now!”
“Do you really want to ruin Jack’s birthday!”
“Jack?” I repeated.
“Yeah, he is named after you.”
Amber had named our child after me? She had made sure I was no part of her life whatsoever and all this time she was bringing up my child alone! Not supported by me at all! I had to see her.
“Don’t.” Cole stood in my way. “We get it you have to talk to her. But not here and not now.” Cole was being reasonable, something he never was. “Amber was always going to tell you. You should let that still be the plan.”
“Like she is going to talk to me now!” I scoffed. I knew Amber. It would be her mission to make sure I didn’t hurt our son.
Our son.
Those two words were on repeat.
I had a son.
With Amber.
“Jack’s going to stay with Dad tomorrow night. We will make sure we are all out. You rock up. Act like you haven’t already stalked her. And see how it goes,” Troy suggested.
“She won’t tell me.”
“She’s been planning on it since you called her. She doesn’t think you are out until the end of the month though. How are you out early?” Troy picked up on the fact I had lied to them about my release date.
“Lied.”
Cole scoffed, while Troy’s look hardened.
“Well, if you want to have a relationship with my nephew and your son, you better not fucking lie again.” Troy was as protective over Jack as he was Amber.
