“We’re going back inside before we are missed. You rock up at her house tomorrow at eight. Guessing you know where she lives now?” Cole asked.

I nodded.

I can’t believe I was actually going to let them walk back inside and be with my kid, while I waited until tomorrow night.

But it seemed like that was what was happening until I grabbed Troy by the upper arm, causing a heated glare from him.

“What’s Jack’s last name?” Had Amber used a fake one? Had she made one up? Had she used hers?

“Johnston.” Troy gave me my answer and then ripped his arm from my grasp and headed inside.

I watched the sliding doors shut.

She had used my name.

She hadn’t just named him after me, she had given him my last name. Did that mean she didn’t hate me completely?

What do I do now?

The shock disappeared. I knew what I had to do. I had to come up with a reason why she would let me be a part of his life, and hers.

Fuck. I had a son.

Chapter Six

Jax

I never thought I could love Amber more. Didn’t think it was possible. But knowing she had given me a son…

My heart was beating for her completely.

I walked up her porch steps. It was one minute past eight. I literally couldn’t wait a second longer. Let alone a minute.

I pushed her doorbell. The boys had said they’d make sure she was home. So, I was surprised by the darkness of the house. Was I waking her up? I bet she was taking the opportunity for an early night, without Jack. Jack’s name hit me again.

Lights flickered on inside, lighting up the windows that ran down the side of the doors. Okay. I was going to see her.

I had to keep my cool in order for this to work.

I had to let her tell me herself.

Her door opened.God, just keep your cool, Jackson.

“I’ll go get Tinks,” Amber said, her eyes on the ground and then she looked up.

Her eyes locking with mine. Six years, one month, four days and I didn’t know how many hours. But that’s how long it had been since I saw her. I had gotten a longer sentence because I nearly killed the guard who took her away from me.

I don’t think I’ve ever been that angry in my life. Being locked away from her. And someone as weak as a guard pulling her from me.

“Hey, sweetheart.” The words just came out. Her face twisted from shock to stunned. She just blinked at me.

“You’re here.” Her mouth dropped open. I had missed her expressions. Like right now, I knew she wasn’t sure if she was really seeing me or not. Like she was dreaming. At least I hoped she would consider it a dream and not a nightmare.

Last time we spoke, I had promised her I would wait until she reached out for me. And I was just going to take the back seat in her life. I was going to wait. But waiting went out the window as soon as I locked eyes with Jack.

“Yeah, I am.” And I was so late. Six years too late. But I wouldn’t change it. I wouldn’t have her going to prison.

She ran a hand through her hair. “Okay, this is happening.”
