“You okay, sweetheart?”
She slowly turned around. “He’s lying to me.” Her phone started ringing and she dropped it onto the kitchen island like it burned her. “I don’t want to speak to him.”
I should be happy hearing that. But I wasn’t. Because I knew she didn’t really mean it.
“You should let him explain, Amber.”
“He won’t explain! That’s the problem!” She was looking sick again. Going white. She was really getting upset. I didn’t know what to do. I only knew one way to relax her and she wouldn’t want sex right now. Not with me anyway.
Okay, I knew Amber. I knew everything about her. Maybe not every detail of her life at the moment. But I would as soon as she let me. Right now, what did she need me to do? I wasn’t used to touching someone, so it felt odd to be holding her by the hips but, at the same time, really right.
I took my hands off her and cupped her face, looking into her eyes.
“What do you need me to do?” I’d look into Will, find out why he had the boys here watching her and police following her. I’d also get the answer on why Tae wanted my son out of the country.
Jack wasn’t leaving the country. Tae could fuck off. As for Will lying to her, well, I could easily take him out for doing it. If he was putting my family at risk, he was a dead man.
I could see the debate in her eyes, I just didn’t know what the debate was over.
“Do you have somewhere you need to be tonight?” she asked softly, keeping her eyes locked with mine, a debate still playing within them.
The only reason I was even in this city was because of her. Here was my destination. “No.”
She stepped back out of my grasp. “You are going to regret coming here tonight.”
“I doubt that, sweetheart.” I smiled but wanted to touch her again.
I frowned as she backed away from me. Where was she going?
“I have something you need to read. Just give me a minute.” She turned around and took off into another room. Looked like a study.
I glanced at her phone that was ringing on the counter. It hadn’t stopped ringing. I don’t think he was going to give up. He would be freaking out trying to work out what she meant by “I’m done.” I knew what it felt like to be worried about Amber leaving.
Also, the fact she was with me would be pissing him off. Because it pissed me off, knowing she had been with him.
If he thought I wouldn’t make a move, he was wrong. He shouldn’t be counting on trusting me to do the right thing. The right thing was to leave her to live her life with my son and him. But I wasn’t doing the right thing.
I never did the right thing.
She was back, grasping a manila folder, that was filled by the looks of it. That debate that been in her eyes earlier was gone. She had made a decision and she seemed happy with it but nervous.
Was it about Will?
She moved around the couch and looked at me when I didn’t follow her.
“Trust me, you want to be sitting down for this.” She opened the folder and pulled an envelope out.
I didn’t need her to encourage me. I took the envelope she was holding and sat down next to her, my arm along the back of the couch, I wanted nothing more than to drop it, so I was holding her. But I didn’t want to spook her.
It was a letter. I glanced at her. It was in her handwriting. Was she doing it? Was she telling me about Jack? What had changed her mind? I felt proud of her immediately. She was showing strength. She had always been strong. But right now, she was pulling on all she had of it, to do this.
I started to read the letter.
