He showed me the phone. “Not lying.”
“Fuck.” I pulled my hand from Jax and quickly ran to Tyler, snatching the phone before he answered it.
“Well, that was rude,” Tyler said as I put it to my ear.
“I’m not alone,” I said into the phone. Before he even said a word.
“Then get alone.”
I was already doing just that. I unlocked the back door, forgetting all about the news.
I felt all eyes on me as I stepped out of the back door. I closed it. The rain had eased and I slipped on my shoes that were next to our BBQ and walked out into my backyard.
“Okay, Tae, go.” It must be really important for him to use this line. He had never used it. It was his secure line. So, no one would be listening and it activated a block on my phone so no one would be listening on my end.
“Are you going to marry Will?”
What an odd question! In fact, it was just plain weird! Why would he use our secure line for a conversation about my love life?
“Does it really matter?” I asked, coming to a stop next to Jack’s fort.
“Well, I want to know if I can kill him or not Amber, so yes, it does matter.”
“Why on earth would you kill him!”
“I have tried to protect you from this shit. But the shit he is pulling you in, well, I can’t protect you from it once I’m back in the UK.”
“You’re still in town?”
“Yes, and we need to talk.”
I glanced back at the house where my brothers and Jax watching me. Jax had moved to the back door, and he looked like he was second from coming out.
“What do you mean by the shit he is pulling me into?”
“Do you know who he is up against in court?”
“No.” I never kept up with Will’s cases. I managed my job and Jack. I couldn’t manage Will’s work as well. Plus, he always gave me white lies about it.
“The Matthews brothers.”
“The ones who traffic ice from the bay to the coast?” My information was dated. I wasn’t in the loop anymore. But they once reached out to Tae, wanting to sell their drugs in his strip clubs and bars.
“Yes. But they got caught on a bank robbery charge.”
“Well, it won’t stick.” I knew that. Their history proved that. Whenever they got caught, they would get out of it. Hell, back when I was working with the TNS, they got charged with a boat full carrying Ice and they got off it.
“It’s because the prosecution usually caves, Amber.”
“So?” I didn’t see the link.
“Will is the prosecution, Amber.”
Oh. “So, what they are threatening him?”
“No. You and Jack. They are under the impression you are his wife and Jack is his child.”
“Well, they’ve got it wrong!”
