This was Will and I—easy. We didn’t do drama or massive fights. Will and I were simple. Like breathing. Which was why I couldn’t put it off any longer.

“Will, I need to talk to you.” I sat up on the bed. It was time to bring tonight to a point. The point of him giving the case up.

“Babe, we’ve been talking for hours,” Will said, not picking up on my serious tone.

I took a nervous breath in. “It’s about your case.”

Will went silent. Was he going to hang up?

“You saw the news, didn’t you?” Will’s voice was solemn, cold immediately.

“I need you to give this case up, Will. Please.” Was I really going to beg him? Yeah, I was. I would do anything to make sure Jack was safe. I would protect my son.

“You can’t ask me that, Amber.”

“I can! You are putting my son in danger, Will! Hell, you skipped danger and got him on a hit list!” Okay, the lid on my temper was off. I had been in shock all day since hearing it from Tae. But now, that shock was wearing off. “Jack is on a hit list! Because of you!”

“Amber, once I lock them up, they won’t hurt you or Jack.”

“They won’t stop! The hit isn’t going to go away just because you lock them up! If anything, it will make them more determined!” He should trust me. He knew I knew this life. He knew I had an understanding of it—more than he did anyway.

“Amber, I’m not dropping the case.”

“Do you want me to leave?”

“No!”

“Well, these are my options. Leave and be with Tae, or you back down.” I felt sick. Like really sick. It wasn’t a nervous sick or a stress sick; I was physically sick because my son was in harm’s way. “Please, Will, just drop it. Tell me you will come home and things can go back to normal?”

I was panicking. I was so nervous. I just wanted my life to rewind a month. Go back to simple. Just Jack, Will, and I.

“Will, I’ll marry you. You hear me. I will do it. Just back down from this case.”

I heard him sigh on the other side of the phone. “Amber, you wouldn’t be marrying me because you love me. You would be doing it to make sure Jack is safe.”

“Don’t you want that? To make sure Jack is safe?” Surely, after all this time, Will hadn’t faked his love toward my son?

“You know I love Jack.” If he loved Jack, why would he put him in harm’s way?

“Then back down.” I didn’t mean to be crying but I was. I didn’t wipe the tears away. “Please, Will. Just make this go away.”

I would do anything in order for this to go away. I wanted to rewind time. Stop Will from taking this case to begin with.

“I’ll marry you. I’ll do anything. Just get my son off the hit list. I’ll do whatever you want.” I was begging and I wasn’t above it. I would do anything to make sure Jack was safe. I just wanted my life to go back to simple. To my biggest problem being whether Tinks had gotten out. And Jack’s battle with wanting a snake.

“You’ll really marry me?”

I pinched my eyes shut, taking a sharp breath in. I would for Jack. “Yes.”

“And that family I want, you will have one with me?”

My eyes opened up, slowly in realization. “I thought we were already a family?”

“You know what I mean, Amber.”

“You don’t consider Jack yours.” It was a bitter fact. After all these years. After how much I watched those two together. Will helped raise Jack. But I was seeing how he really saw my son for the first time.

Will sighed. “I want my own children, Amber. With you. You have always known that.”
